Overview
The Director of Student Engagement and Success at the College of Emerging and Collaborative Studies (CECS), University of Tennessee, Knoxville, reports to the Assistant Dean and leads initiatives to build meaningful connections with current and prospective students, foster a vibrant college culture, and support students on their academic and professional journey. The role works with CECS faculty and staff to promote student-facing initiatives, including events, mentorship programs, and experiential learning opportunities, and to develop the student engagement and success infrastructure to meet recruitment, experiential learning, professional development, and placement metrics for in-person and online students. This position emphasizes commitment to student success, inclusive engagement, collaboration across campus, strategic thinking, problem-solving, creativity, adaptability, and enthusiasm. Student Engagement & Support
Develop strategies to meet student engagement and success metrics. Lead development and implementation of CECS student organizations, clubs, competitions and other experiential learning activities, working with faculty and campus partners. Organize CECS events and initiatives such as graduation ceremonies, career fairs, orientation sessions, and other event tasks; represent CECS at campus events for students. Develop and maintain the CECS Student Handbook and CECS Canvas Portal, with clear communications to students. Supervise the Student Advisory Council, including election oversight, regular meetings, and event organization. Supervise Student Ambassadors (recruitment, hiring, onboarding, training, scheduling, and performance development). Identify and coordinate with partners (student organizations and campus events) to raise campus awareness of CECS offerings. Act as CECS liaison to UTK’s Center for Career Development and Academic Exploration (CCDAE), supporting career readiness and internship pathways, including annual career fair participation. Contribute to the RISE Mentorship program by supporting RISE Base Camp, onboarding through RISE Climb, coordinating peer support via the RISE Team model, and leading the annual RISE Summit Showcase. Collaborative Recruitment Support
Create and implement an annual recruitment strategy to meet defined metrics. Develop programs and materials for prospective students in line with UTK policies and recruitment protocols. Coordinate planning and logistics for major recruitment events (e.g., Big Orange Preview, New Vol Admit Day) with the Assistant Dean and event coordinator. Collaborate with Enrollment Management and Admissions to support high school visits, college fairs, and other recruitment efforts. Work with campus partners to foster belonging for CECS programs among exploratory, transfer, veterans, and non-traditional pathways students. Lead CECS K-12 outreach and cultivate high school partnerships aligned with CECS’s mission and talent goals, including strategic initiatives in this area. Support CECS proposals involving K-12 engagement, data collection, and contact management as needed. Assist the Assistant Dean in developing pre-collegiate curricular and co-curricular programs to support college readiness. Build relationships with community stakeholders and educators, including high school counselors and alumni, ensuring timely responses to inquiries from prospective students. Plan events for prospective students and families (open houses, high school visits, college fairs, information sessions) and assess and revise approaches as needed. Help produce communications and materials highlighting CECS programs for prospective and admitted students and their families, in partnership with the CECS Communications and Marketing team. Maintain a database of prospective student statuses and applicant information. Event Leadership & Coordination
Lead planning of CECS student-facing events and activities with the CECS team, ensuring events are high-quality, accessible, and aligned with engagement and recruitment goals. Data, Planning, and Strategy
Contribute to annual planning by providing feedback on student engagement and recruitment goals, tracking metrics, and evaluating outcomes. Maintain detailed records of student involvement, ambassador participation, and recruitment interactions to inform future initiatives and ongoing data tracking and reporting. Collaborate with the CECS Team to align strategic messaging and ensure data-driven decision-making across student-facing programs. Qualifications
Required Qualifications
Education
Master’s degree in higher education, counseling, communications, or related field. Or a Bachelor's degree with 10+ years of relevant experience. Experience
3–5 years of experience in student services, outreach, advising, or program coordination. Student worker experience or volunteer roles in higher education student support or recruitment considered. Preferred Qualifications
PhD preferred. Experience with diverse student populations. Familiarity with software platforms such as Slate, Banner, or CRM systems. Work Location
