Job Description
The School Nurse supports the health and well-being of all students from Pre-K through Grade 12 by providing skilled nursing care, managing chronic and acute health conditions, maintaining health records, administering medications, ensuring compliance with state health regulations, and promoting health education and safety across the school community. This is a year-round position as the School Nurse also supports summer camp programming at the conclusion of the school year.
Key Responsibilities:Health ServicesProvide direct care to students for injuries, illnesses, and chronic conditions
Assess and manage health concerns; determine whether students should return to class, rest, or be sent home.
Administer prescribed medications and treatments according to physician orders and school policy.
Develop and manage care plans and emergency action plans for students with chronic conditions (e.g., asthma, diabetes, allergies, seizures).
Maintain accurate and confidential student health records in compliance with HIPAA and FERPA.
Monitor and ensure compliance with state immunization requirements and health screenings.
Maintain all student health files prior and during the school year.
Prepare and submit required reports to local and state health departments.
Track and communicate health trends or contagious illnesses to school leadership and families as needed.
Serve as a liaison between home, school, and healthcare providers to support student wellness.
Collaborate with administrators, teachers, counselors, and support staff on student health needs.
Communicate health concerns and recommendations with families in a clear and timely manner.
Provide training for faculty/staff on relevant health topics (e.g., EpiPen use, universal precautions, first aid, CPR/AED).
Promote wellness and preventative care through age-appropriate health education initiatives, in collaboration with the health and wellness department.
Assess and triage students who are appropriate referrals to the counseling team
Provide detailed feedback on nursing visits, including frequency, duration and intensity to the Student Resource Teams at each division level.
Support mental health and emotional well-being in coordination with the counseling team.
Emergency Preparedness & Safety
Maintain and replenish first aid kits, AEDs, and emergency supplies throughout campus.
Respond to school-wide emergencies and participate in emergency drills and safety planning.
Assist in developing and implementing health-related policies and procedures (e.g., communicable disease control, return-to-play guidelines).
Qualifications:
Required:
Registered Nurse (RN) license in Pennsylvania
CPR/AED certification
Experience working with children or adolescents
Preferred:
Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (BSN)
School nurse certification (if required in your state)
Experience in a PreK–12 school setting or pediatric care
Familiarity with Magnus Health, August Schools Health Portal, or similar student health record systems
Strong clinical assessment and decision-making skills
Knowledge about the connection between physical and mental health with ability to make appropriate referral and treatment decisions
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a school environment
Cultural sensitivity and discretion in handling confidential information
Calm and compassionate under pressure
