The Self Loader Log Truck Driver loads/unloads and hauls wood products from job sites or wood yard to customers/wood yard in a safe and legal manner following Company, Local, State and DOT laws and guidelines. We are hiring a Log Truck Driver for the Western Upper Peninsula.

Transports products in a safe and efficient manner from job sites or log yard to log yard or customers during day, evening, or overnight hours.

  • Maneuver truck into loading/unloading position and load/unload forest products using knuckle boom loader.
  • Create legal loads of veneer or saw logs, saw bolts, pulpwood, according to state laws.
  • Secure loads in a legal manner with chains or straps according to state laws.
  • Check load in route to ensure logs or pulpwood have not shifted, adjust load and secure again.
  • Release binders and unload products according to instructions given by mill or yard staff.
  • Maintain trip ticket and scale slips for loads hauled; turn them into office.
  • Maintain contact with supervisor, logging crews and other trucks hauling in area.
  • Assist in planning routes to ensure most economical use of time.
  • Relay customer concerns or questions to supervisor.
  • Comply with environmental standards and clean up spills with spill kit and report according to procedures.

Maintain vehicle in a safe operating condition as required by State and DOT regulations.

  • Perform before, during, and after operation user inspections, maintenance, and repairs; provide reports.
  • Perform emergency roadside repairs, such as changing tires, installing light bulbs, tire chains, and spark plugs.
  • Install and remove tire chains.
  • Report and/or refer defects or needed repairs to supervisor.
  • Maintain maintenance logs on company-owned trucks.

Promote high safety standards; comply with local, state, and federal transportation and safety laws and regulations.

  • Always operate log truck in a safe manner; detect and eliminate safety hazards.
  • Maintain truck logs according to state and federal regulations utilizing software.

Work Schedule / Supervision

Position:Full-time, 40+ hours per week; irregular hours with early start time & late end time; constant travel to remote woodlands’ sites; some overnight stays out of town.

Position Status: Exempt Status: without compensation; without notice.

Recommended Education / Experience

High School Diploma or GED, 21+ years of age; CDL Class A License; valid Medical Examiner’s Certificate; pre-Employment and Random Controlled Substance and Alcohol Test; 5+ years log truck driving; working knowledge of State and DOT regulations, traffic laws and defensive driving; safely driving vehicles; safety precautions with logging equipment

No record of criminal convictions which may be deemed to disqualify the person from employment; annual review of driving record with copy of license; all moving violations reported to company within 3 days; immediate termination of employment for alcohol or drug related offense; reliable transportation to location of truck.
