Performs basic (entry-level) work safely driving and operating a tractor-trailer combo, which may include (but is not limited to) moving specialized heavy construction equipment involved in the maintenance and construction of County roads. The Truck Driver I works under close supervision with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.
- Drives truck with a capacity of more than 3 tons to transport and deliver cargo, materials, and other items to a jobsite.
- Maintains truck log according to state and federal regulations.
- Positions blocks and ties ropes around items to secure cargo for transport.
- Cleans, inspects, and services vehicle.
- Operates equipment on vehicle to load, unload, or disperse cargo or materials.
- Assists in loading and unloading truck manually.
- Performs related work as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Graduation from high school or equivalent (GED) required.
- Experience in commercial driving or related field preferred.
Certificates, Licenses, and Registration:
- Must have a valid current Texas motor vehicle operator’s license.
- Texas Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) required; may require specialized endorsements depending on assignment.
- Must be insurable by the County’s insurance carrier.
- Positions requiring a CDL or safety-sensitive roles are subject to drug and alcohol testing per federal regulations.
- Position is subject to FMCSA Clearinghouse requirements, including queries for alcohol and drug violations. Applicants must register with the FMCSA Clearinghouse and consent to pre-employment queries. Non-compliance may affect employment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of equipment operation and maintenance, skilled in using specialized heavy equipment.
- Knowledge of safe operation procedures and Texas Motor Vehicle Code provisions.
- Ability to operate equipment effectively and safely.
- Ability to perform strenuous outdoor work.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to read and interpret safety rules, manuals, and documents.
- Basic math skills and ability to follow detailed instructions.
- Problem-solving skills involving standardized situations.
- Ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously.
- Bilingual in Spanish and English preferred, with fluency in both.
- Effective communication skills.
- Ability to interact with departmental staff, vendors, and external agencies.
