Truck Driver I Job at Hidalgo County in Edinburg

Performs basic (entry-level) work safely driving and operating a tractor-trailer combo, which may include (but is not limited to) moving specialized heavy construction equipment involved in the maintenance and construction of County roads. The Truck Driver I works under close supervision with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment.

1. Drives truck with a capacity of more than 3 tons to transport and deliver cargo, materials, and other items to a jobsite.
2. Maintains truck log according to state and federal regulations.
3. Positions blocks and ties ropes around items to secure cargo for transport.
4. Cleans, inspects, and services vehicle.
5. Operates equipment on vehicle to load, unload, or disperse cargo or materials.
6. Assists in loading and unloading truck manually.
7. Performs related work as assigned.

Qualifications:

1. Graduation from high school or equivalent (GED) required.
2. Experience in commercial driving or related field preferred.

Certificates, Licenses, and Registration:

1. Must have a valid current Texas motor vehicle operator’s license.
2. Texas Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) required; may require specialized endorsements depending on assignment.
3. Must be insurable by the County’s insurance carrier.
4. Positions requiring a CDL or safety-sensitive roles are subject to drug and alcohol testing per federal regulations.
5. Position is subject to FMCSA Clearinghouse requirements, including queries for alcohol and drug violations. Applicants must register with the FMCSA Clearinghouse and consent to pre-employment queries. Non-compliance may affect employment.

1. Knowledge of equipment operation and maintenance, skilled in using specialized heavy equipment.
2. Knowledge of safe operation procedures and Texas Motor Vehicle Code provisions.
3. Ability to operate equipment effectively and safely.
4. Ability to perform strenuous outdoor work.
5. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
6. Ability to read and interpret safety rules, manuals, and documents.
7. Basic math skills and ability to follow detailed instructions.
8. Problem-solving skills involving standardized situations.
9. Ability to perform multiple tasks simultaneously.
10. Bilingual in Spanish and English preferred, with fluency in both.
11. Effective communication skills.
12. Ability to interact with departmental staff, vendors, and external agencies.
