DEPARTMENT: Public Works / Stormwater, City of Rocky Mount

JOB SUMMARY: Responsible for operating trucks and other vehicles and equipment in the construction, maintenance, and repair of the city stormwater system.

Responsibilities

  • Transport materials to work sites, including sand, stone, soil, and gravel.
  • Lays pipes.
  • Patches holes in drainage pipes.
  • Builds and repairs catch basins.
  • Installs and repairs landscaping.
  • Operates snowplows and salt spreaders.
  • Operates chain saws and pole saws.
  • Operates sewer jet truck.
  • Assists in determining grades.
  • Maintains assigned vehicles and equipment.
  • Clean storm drains.
  • Flags traffic at work sites.
  • Transport heavy equipment to work sites.
  • Responds to after-hours emergencies.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • One (1) year of experience in a related field of work.
  • Combination of experience in a related field of work.

Special Qualification:

  • Possession of a valid Class “B” CDL (or higher) driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

Knowledge, Skills And Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, and equipment used in maintenance and construction activities.
  • Knowledge of equipment operation and maintenance procedures.
  • Knowledge of City geography.
  • Skill in analyzing problems and identifying solutions.
  • Skill in establishing cooperative and productive working relationships.
  • Skill in performing mathematical calculations.
  • Skill in establishing proper grades.
  • Skill in interpersonal relations.
  • Skills in oral and written communication.

Work Details

  • The work is outdoors and may involve inclement weather, noise, and exposure to dust and grease.
  • Physical demands include light to moderate lifting and repetitive motions; protective equipment may be required.
  • Experience and ability to operate vehicles and equipment in stormwater maintenance and construction.
