The purpose of this classification is to operate equipment and perform manual work functions associated with construction, distribution, maintenance, and repair of the water utility system.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Operate a variety of equipment, machinery, and tools used in water system construction, maintenance, and repair, including dump trucks, tapping machines, tamping machines, pipe saws, pipe locators, mowers, weedeaters, jackhammers, air compressors, drill presses, post hole diggers, shovels, axes, saws, and mechanic tools.
- Transport, load, and unload equipment and materials used in projects.
- Perform manual tasks such as locating/marking water lines, repairing pipeline breaks/leaks, conducting water taps, servicing fire hydrants, laying/installing pipes, installing/repairing water meters, boring under roadways, digging holes or trenches, shoveling materials, lifting/moving heavy objects, and flagging traffic.
- Maintain machinery, equipment, and tools in operational condition through inspections, fluid checks, greasing, cleaning, and reporting faulty equipment.
- Ensure an adequate supply of tools, equipment, and materials at work sites.
- Complete forms, reports, drawings, and other documentation accurately.
- Review and process work tickets, reports, drawings, and maps.
- Communicate via telephone and radio, providing information, relaying messages, and responding to service requests.
- Respond to routine inquiries from employees, officials, and the public.
- Perform maintenance tasks on buildings, grounds, and work areas, such as mowing, planting, weeding, and trash pickup.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED.
- Two (2) years of experience and/or technical training in equipment operation or construction/maintenance work, or equivalent education and experience.
- Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements, or obtain within six months of hire.
- Water Distribution License preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Ability to compile, assemble, and record data accurately.
- Effective communication skills, both verbal and written.
- Proficiency in operating machinery, tools, and equipment used in water system work.
- Basic math skills, including calculations with decimals, percentages, and fractions.
- Ability to interpret instructions and exercise independent judgment.
- Physical ability to perform demanding tasks, including lifting up to 100 pounds, climbing, and working in adverse environmental conditions.
