Overview

DWM Watershed Construction Maintenance Worker II (D) (OLIO - Collection) performs semi-skilled construction and/or maintenance work in support of the wastewater collection system and/or the water distribution system for the Department of Watershed Management in the division of Linear Infrastructure Operations. The role is a lead position operating heavy equipment such as dump trucks, backhoes, and skid loaders, as well as hand and power tools. This role may substitute for supervisors when necessary and may assist other crews as required.

Responsibilities

  • Operate heavy equipment (dump trucks, backhoes, skid loaders) and hand/power tools to support wastewater collection and water distribution operations.
  • Respond to Watershed Dispatch calls related to sewer spills, odor complaints, cave-ins, and related maintenance needs.
  • Unblock service cleanouts and clear manhole spills to ensure proper sewer system function.
  • Draft detailed reports documenting inspections, task completions, and recommendations for maintenance activities as needed.
  • Clear debris from catch basins, storm lines, and grates to maintain water flow and prevent blockages.
  • Diagnose causes of cave-ins and remove blockages from service lines using appropriate equipment.
  • Ensure safety at work areas, set up precautions, and flag traffic for crew safety.
  • Conduct pre-trip inspections on equipment to ensure proper functioning and safety.
  • Transport containers to landfills and facilitate vehicle maintenance as needed.
  • Assist Crew Supervisors and other crew members to support overall operations; may lead a crew on construction or maintenance activities.
  • Attend safety classes and meetings to stay updated on safety protocols and regulations.
  • Check pumps and hoses for leaks and monitor bypass process integrity.
  • Assist in locating manholes in wooded areas and, as needed, coordinate with other agencies as appropriate.
  • Assist in performing other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of department policies, general site safety, and basic mathematical principles as they relate to water operations and maintenance.
  • Skill in operating light to heavy power equipment (backhoe, excavator, vactor truck) and maintaining tools and equipment.
  • Ability to understand and apply policies and procedures; establish cooperative working relationships; perform maintenance tasks; maintain records and simple reports; work beyond normal hours as required; troubleshoot heavy equipment related to water mains; communicate with customers diplomatically; adapt to changing environments; document work status with photos and data input.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED; 2 years of experience in construction and wastewater collection or water distribution systems; and a State of Georgia Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) Class B; or
  • High school diploma or GED; 3 to 4 years of experience in construction and wastewater collection or water distribution systems.
  • Licenses and Certifications: State of Georgia CDL Class B is desirable.

Preferred Requirements

  • Water Distribution License or Wastewater Collection License

Lifting Requirements

Heavy work: Exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
