California Rural Legal Assistance, Inc. (CRLA) is an anti-poverty law firm that dismantles unjust systems through community lawyering in California’s historically rural areas. We work with people priced out of private legal representation so they can uphold civil rights in housing, employment, health, and public education. Through our 17 Rural Justice Centers, communities can access a broad range of legal tools, including direct legal services, place-based advocacy to expand equity in civic institutions, and specialized litigation to advance civil rights.

Position: Receptionist

Location: Stockton Office, Stockton, CA
Position Type: Full Time
Salary Range: $21.03 - $25.64 Hourly

Responsibilities

  • The Receptionist manages communications, incoming and outgoing correspondence, filing, travel, calendar, and general organizational matters within the local office.
  • Coordinate minimal liaison with outside counsel for litigation and maintain records of litigated and transactional matters, as well as vendor, supplier, and other office contracts.
  • Greets clients and prospective clients with a positive, calm, and supportive demeanor.
  • Answer phones and respond to inquiries in person or over the phone; transfer calls to the appropriate person.
  • Refer callers and visitors to appropriate community resources and services; perform secretarial duties such as filing, calendar management, and handling administrative details with minimal direction.
  • Assist Legal Secretary to type, review, and ensure all legal documents/enclosures are in proper processing order and grammatically correct.
  • Independently compose outgoing correspondence cover sheets and send client correspondence or copies to third parties.
  • File documents with the court and stay updated with changes in local court rules and procedural requirements for litigation.
  • Assist legal staff and Legal Secretary to maintain records relating to legal matters and ensure deadlines are met.
  • Operate a variety of office machines.
  • Assist attorneys or legal staff with translating and interpreting for non-English speaking clients when requested.
  • Accurately input case and project information into the Case Management System, including time records and calendaring.
  • Maintain referral sheets and update informational material.
  • Provide support to the Administrative Legal Secretary and assist with library maintenance.
  • Perform other standard law office duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • At least 1–3 years of legal receptionist experience or equivalent.
  • Accurately type 40 wpm.
  • Knowledge of computer software, including Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office Suite; familiarity with Table of Authorities, Internet, and email.
  • Ability to learn data entry and correctly enter information into CRLA’s case management system.
  • Knowledge of or ability to learn all office equipment functions (copiers, fax, scanners).
  • Ability to work collaboratively with all CRLA staff, clients, and community organizations.
  • Ability to maintain client confidentiality at all times.

Preferred Education and Experience

A highly qualified candidate would also have the following:

  • Experience working with low-income families and communities.
  • Experience in a non-profit legal services environment.
  • Prior experience in legal services.
  • Bilingual (English & Spanish) required.

Compensation & Benefits

CRLA offers a diverse, family-friendly environment and compensation based on competitive public-interest salaries; a generous benefits package including 100% employer-covered medical, dental, vision, life, and short & long-term disability insurance for employees and up to 50% for dependents; and a 401K retirement plan with CRLA contribution. Generous paid leave policy includes 15 days of sick leave, 15 holidays per year, and vacation (15 days in the first year, 20 days after one year of service). This is a union position (Legal Service Workers for Rural California "LSWRC"), and the starting hourly range is $21.03 - $25.64 (placement based on related experience). Multilingual differential pay of $70 for oral and $50 for written may apply per pay period.
