Electrician - Signal Electrician - General employment applications may be obtained at the Personnel/Civil Service Office on the 4th floor, City Hall, Governmental Plaza, Binghamton, New York, 13901, or from the City Website at cityofbinghamton-ny.gov. DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The electrician/signal electrician performs work installing, maintaining, and repairing electrical equipment related to street lights, traffic signals, and electrical systems in City-owned buildings and facilities. The work is coordinated with the Commissioner of Public Works and the City Engineer. The electrician/signal electrician works independently or in small groups, planning projects and scheduling work. Supervision may be required depending on specific assignments.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
- Installs, maintains, repairs, and replaces electrical fixtures and cabinets related to traffic signals and street lights.
- Repairs and adjusts circuit breakers, controls, and regulators, replacing parts and repairing contacts.
- Orders parts, keeps records of time and materials used.
- Assists with major department projects and may supervise or lead other employees.
- Operates motor equipment for transporting tools and parts.
- Performs data entry using cartography software to document work and maintain records.
- Plans maintenance and capital projects for street lighting and traffic signals.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, & PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS: Good knowledge of electrical practices, tools, and safety; ability to follow instructions; operate power equipment; plan and supervise projects; operate a computer with office software including CarteGraph; physical condition suitable for the role.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- High school diploma or equivalency and five years of field experience as a Journeyman, Lineman, or Electrician, with two years in supervision, OR
- Associate's Degree in Electrical Technology with five years of field experience and two years of supervision, OR
- Equivalent training and experience as defined above.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Valid Journeyman Electrician license in Binghamton or ability to obtain it; valid NYS DMV Class D license; ongoing training in traffic signal repairs; ability to obtain and maintain required licenses and training.
