Bar Harbor Public Works – Highway Section
Immediate Opening – Highway Mechanic(s)

The Town of Bar Harbor is currently accepting applications for the full-time and part time positions for Highway Mechanic. These positions work on heavy equipment, light equipment and trailers that support the Town’s Highway, Water, Wastewater and Environmental Services operations, as well as provide maintenance and repair services to Police and Fire Department vehicles.
- The primary responsibility of the Mechanic positions is the routine maintenance and all manner of repairs to heavy and light equipment: backhoes, loaders, graders skid steers, tag trailers, trucks, plow equipment and light equipment such as one-ton pick-ups and dump bodies. Additionally, the mechanic is responsible for maintenance and repair of weedwhackers, chain saws, plate compactors and other small engine equipment. The Mechanic position regularly interacts with other Town Departments and Public Work crews. Strong communication skills are a must. The Mechanic positions are directly responsible to the Highway Foreman.
- The Mechanic position requires demonstrated ability to implement tasks with limited instruction and limited oversight and the ability to work efficiently and complete tasks within the time allotted. Demonstrated problem solving ability and ability to work well under pressure is also a must.
- The minimum qualifications for this position include: High School graduate, a valid State of Maine Driver’s License and ability to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License in the future; a valid State of Maine Vehicle Inspection License or ability to obtain one within one year of hire; five plus years of experience in the routine maintenance and repair of heavy and light equipment; and familiar with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) safety regulations that are associated with mechanic related work. Not required, however, welding experience is desired.
