Summary:
Responsible for the operation and maintenance of a passenger vessel, and the activities and job performance of the vessel crew.
Responsibilities Essential Job Functions:
Commands, controls, and operates a passenger vessel in accordance with company policies and procedures, and applicable safety regulations; responsible for navigation, ship-handling, and maneuvering.
Plans and conducts safety drills and training of crew in accordance with U.S. Coast Guard regulations and policy; ensures crew proficiency in performing duties.
Ensures the vessel under command complies with applicable federal and state regulations, and certificates are current.
Maintains all equipment according to scheduled maintenance, and assists mechanics in troubleshooting major mechanical issues.
Maintains high standards of passenger service and crew motivation.
Keeps operational and maintenance logs as necessary.
Maintains vessel appearance and cleanliness to high standards.
Performs other related duties as required.
Qualifications Necessary Skills and Knowledge:
Thorough knowledge of U.S. Coast Guard regulations, seamanship, and maritime safety procedures.
Knowledge of marine machinery, equipment, systems, and repair methods.
Excellent navigational and ship handling skills.
Strong interpersonal, customer service, and organizational skills.
Proficiency in ship handling, navigation, and marine electronic equipment.
Ability to supervise, build teamwork, and maintain crew morale.
Ability to maintain vessel and equipment in good condition.
Effective communication skills, both oral and written, including report writing and use of computers.
Flexibility to work varied shifts, including weekends, holidays, and overnight trips.
Physical ability to perform strenuous work and lift up to 50 pounds.
Minimum Qualifications
U.S. Coast Guard 100-ton Master’s License.
Current Medical Card, TWIC card, FCC Radio Operators Certificate.
At least five years of Captain or First Mate experience on vessels rated 50 tons or more, operating in Southeast Alaska waters.
Valid driver’s license with a good record.
Ability to pass drug testing and background checks.
Preferred Qualifications
Mechanical skills and marine maintenance knowledge.
Experience with passenger transportation operations.
Radar Observer endorsement.
