Summary

Works aboard U.S. Navy Surface ships, performing shipboard repairs and installing simple and/or complex modifications to equipment using plans, schematics, sketches, blueprints, or written/verbal instructions. Repairs, troubleshoots, or replaces components, parts, and other mechanical pieces, including motors, pumps, gears, bearings, electro-mechanical items, valves, valve operators, and other standard marine vessel engineering systems. Must follow guidance documents and perform work to accepted standards.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain proper operation of equipment, machinery, or mechanical devices, including engines, pumps, and electro-mechanical devices.
  • Investigate malfunctioning equipment to determine failure sources.
  • Replace or repair parts using hand and power tools.
  • Diagnose mechanical issues with electrical and electronic components using electrical test equipment.
  • Coordinate maintenance and repairs.
  • Communicate with vendors and customers regarding scope of work.
  • Obtain quotes and request purchase orders for specific jobs.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of NAVSEA Standard Items.
  • Willingness to learn and dependable work ethic.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical documents, safety rules, and manuals.

Education & Experience

High school diploma or equivalent, plus technical/vocational training or relevant work experience.

Working Conditions

Shipyard environment with minimal exposure to extreme temperatures, noise, chemicals, fumes, airborne particles, weather, dust, humidity, and machinery hazards.

Equipment Used

Hand tools, computer, telephone, fax, copier, scanner.
