POSITION SUMMARY
The PSM Refrigeration Lead oversees compliance, operation, and maintenance of ammonia refrigeration systems in accordance with OSHA PSM and EPA RMP regulations. This role ensures safe, efficient refrigeration processes, supports audits, and leads training for refrigeration and safety programs.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following: Maintain and organize documentation for all 14 PSM elements. Ensure compliance with OSHA 1910.119, EPA RMP, and plant policies. Develop point-of-use safety libraries and SOPs for ammonia systems. Lead PHAs, MOCs, PSSRs, audits, and follow-up on corrective actions. Maintain mechanical integrity and PM schedules for critical systems. Troubleshoot and repair complex refrigeration and boiler equipment. Oversee emergency response plans and employee PSM participation. Support capital/expense budgeting for PSM-related projects. Manage contractor safety and coordinate training initiatives. Stand in for Supervisor and lead refrigeration team as needed. Participate in incident investigations and regulatory audits. Remain on-call 24/7 for refrigeration and PSM support. Other duties as assigned. QUALIFICATIONS (Knowledge, Skills, and Experience)
Technical degree or certification in industrial refrigeration preferred. Minimum 3-5 years of ammonia refrigeration experience. Strong knowledge of OSHA 1910.119 and EPA RMP. RETA certification (CIRO or CARO) preferred. Experience in meat/food processing industry is an advantage. Able to work in cold, fast-paced, and regulated environments; bilingual skills a plus.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee maybe required to lift heavy equipment and materials, such as compressors, condensers, refrigerant cylinders, and tools; climbing ladders and working at heights to access and maintain refrigeration systems. The employee will constantly be on feet, walking around the facility, and standing for extended periods during maintenance and repairs which may at times be slippery due to marinades, water, and other liquids associated with the production process. The employee will need to bend, stoop, and crouch to access equipment and work on low-lying components.
Specific hearing abilities are required due to regular exposure to prolonged noise. Precise vision is required for this position to perform detailed visual inspections and repairs of equipment and machinery, and to identify electrical color codes or safety labels. The employee will be working in a climate-controlled environment of -40°F to -45°F. The employee may be exposed to strong odors such as raw meat and marinades from seasoned meat.
Wearing proper PPE such as gloves, goggles, and possibly refrigeration suits to ensure safety. Handling ammonia systems may require the use of appropriate protective gear to prevent exposure to this potentially hazardous substance.
