Created in 1978 by the New Mexico Legislature, the Department of Cultural Affairs (DCA) represents New Mexico's dedication to preserving and celebrating the cultural integrity and diversity of our state. The Department oversees a broad range of New Mexico's arts and cultural heritage agencies. These include 15 divisions representing a variety of programs and services. The Office of Archaeological Studies (OAS) is a Division of the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs. The mission of OAS is to promote the understanding and preservation of New Mexico's rich archaeological heritage through its diverse programs of public archaeological services, specialized research, outreach and education. OAS provides archaeological services to State, Federal, Tribal, municipal, and private clients; specialized archaeological research; and outreach programming statewide. Why does the job exist? This position serves as the Director of Business Operations (DBO) for OAS. OAS is an enterprise state agency that provides archaeological services to clients on a cost-reimbursable basis and outreach programming statewide. This position supports the Executive Directorand contributes to the success of OAS through the administration of the business functions of the division by managing finances, personnel, projects, and client relationships. How does it get done? The Director of Business Operations supports the Executive Director and administers the operational finances of OAS, including reconciling State and project budgets, managing invoicing and purchasing, and administering grants. This position serves as the senior project manager overseeing contracts, permitting, scheduling and progress of OAS projects. The DBO assists the Executive Director with recruiting clients and developing new projects; contributes to OAS projects through data analysis, laboratory artifact analysis, report writing, deliverables review, and occasional fieldwork; provides management and support for HR matters; and will occasionally lead or contribute to special research or outreach projects. Who are the customers? This position serves State, Federal, Tribal, municipal, and private archaeology clients, and OAS Staff. Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate must be listed or be able to be listed on the SHPO directory as a principal investigator for archaeology or history/architectural history. Candidate has a Graduate degree in Anthropology/Archaeology, History, Architectural History, or closely related field. This candidate has experience with project management; database or financial software (MS Access, Quickbooks, or similar); and office administration and staff supervision. A Bachelor's degree in any field of study from an accredited college or university and eight (8) years of professional level experience with a light strategic impact directly related to the purpose of the position defined by the agency at the time of recruitment.Any combination of education from an accredited college or university and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling twelve (12) years may substitute for the required education and experience. A hiring agency will designate a portion of the required experience to include management, supervisory and/or specialized experience.Any required licensure, certification or registration shall be defined at the time of recruitment and will be in addition to the above requirements. Employment Requirements Employment is subject to a pre-employment background investigation and is conditional pending results. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License. Working Conditions Work is performed primarily in an office setting and occasionally in the field. Extensive personal computer and phone usage with exposure to visual/video display terminal (VDT) is common. Evening and weekend work may be required. Occasional travel is required.
