40 HOURS PER WEEK POSITION
Under general supervision, performs maintenance and repairs of a variety of gasoline and diesel powered vehicles and equipment. Work involves performing work to maintain, repair, and perform preventative maintenance on city vehicles and equipment. Reports to the Assistant Foreman.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Troubleshoots and repairs City vehicles and equipment. Performs diagnostic procedures on vehicles/equipment in order to determine necessary repairs or maintenance.
Repairs assigned mechanical defects such as hydraulic, electrical, air conditioning, tire, drive train, brakes, steering, transmission, and related systems.
Repairs small engines, light duty vehicles, trucks, electrical generators, tractors, lawn mowers, radiators, backhoes, diesel engines, axles, front ends, heavy duty vehicles, etc.
Performs minor and major repairs and maintenance on City automobiles and other vehicles or equipment including changing tires, adjusting headlights, changing spark plugs, adjusting or replacing fan belts, and minor motor tune-ups.
Performs bodywork including such duties as sand blasting, undercoating, priming and painting, and making fiberglass repairs.
Performs various preventative maintenance duties such as changing oil, fluids, belts, hoses, tires, filters, etc., and performing greasing, cleaning, and other routine tasks.
Operates shop equipment such as diagnostic machines and gauges, electric welding equipment, drill press, pneumatic drill, grinders, cutting and braising torch, hand tools, pneumatic wrench, etc.
Performs wrecker service and responds to calls; performs duties on an on-call basis as assigned for emergency repairs.
Repairs tires which includes plugging or inserting boot, replacing and balancing tires on a computerized balancing system, changing tires with tire changers or manually, replacing tubes, etc.
Makes road calls and determines the disposition of repair needed; performs or initiates corrective action, as needed, i.e. changing tires, jump-starting vehicles, etc.
Maintains work areas in a clean and orderly manner to promote effective and safe operations.
Receives and/or reviews various records and report such as verbal instructions.
Prepares and/or processes various records and reports such as verbal instructions and work orders. Refers to manuals, diagnostics, policy and procedure manuals, codes / laws / regulations, publications and reference texts, etc.
Operates a variety of vehicles and a variety of equipment and machinery such as diagnostic computer, air conditioning machine, transmission machines, car lifts, air / hydraulic jacks, etc.
Uses a variety of tools such as pressure tester, hand tools, air tools, hand wrenches, calipers, etc.; and a variety of supplies such as oil, brake fluid, grease, replacement parts, general office supplies, etc.
Interacts and communicates with various groups and individuals such as Assistant Foreman, coworkers, other City departments, contractors, and the general public.
ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Performs other related duties as required.
May be required to report to work during emergency situations, including, but not limited to, city-wide declared emergencies.
Two to three years of responsible, variable experience as a mechanic including working with vehicles and preferably construction equipment as well or any equivalent combination of training and experience, which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must possess a valid Louisiana State Class “E” Driver’s License.
