The Mid-Atlantic Innocence Project (MAIP) is a 501(c)(3) organization that works to prevent and correct the conviction of innocent people in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia. MAIP has a 15-person staff and focuses on exoneration, wrongful-conviction prevention, and policy reform. About The Position

The Paul Khoury Brady Fellowship is a two-year fellowship for a new attorney or recent law school graduate. The Fellow will be part of the Legal Team and report to the Screening Manager, who oversees a three-person team evaluating the approximately 300 requests MAIP receives each year from individuals who claim innocence. The work frequently involves filing public-information act requests with police and prosecutors to develop a robust case record. Fellows may assist in litigation, data collection, and policy reform efforts related to Brady violations. Essential Job Functions

Screening, Investigation, and Litigation: assist the Screening Manager with preliminary review of applications to identify potential Brady violations; review FOIA/MPIA responses for undisclosed evidence; perform or manage field investigations; draft petitions for relief in collaboration with co-counsel; appear in court with senior MAIP attorneys if hearings occur. Management & Organization: track post-conviction/habeas deadlines; assist with management of the Brady practice, discovery requests, onboarding and training of volunteers and pro bono partners; create and update training materials. Research, Data Collection, and Policy: document undisclosed evidence for data collection; work with the team to improve data systems; develop a Brady Book of relevant case law; train data mining volunteers; contribute to external communications, policy advocacy, and litigation planning.
