We are committed to creating an environment for you to thrive both personally and professionally. The Team
In 2009, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation established a Strategic Investment Fund (SIF) to use equity, debt and guarantee investment tools to advance charitable goals. The fund is investing about $2.5B and has completed more than 100 investments across sectors and asset classes. The 14-person investment team seeks an Investment Officer dedicated to the Strategic Market Tools initiative. The initiative partners with program strategy teams to structure, negotiate and execute complex transactions with private sector entities, multilaterals and governments. The Officer will focus on the volume guarantee portfolio and provide advisory support across the foundation’s program strategies on structured finance products and multi-stakeholder investments. Volume Guarantee Investments
Volume guarantees address access barriers by providing manufacturers with multi-year contractual volume commitments in exchange for reduced prices, increasing supply of high-quality commodities. Since piloting in 2010 and formalizing in 2013, the initiative has completed ~20 transactions totaling over $1.5B in guarantee commitments, accelerating adoption of vaccines, family planning commodities, HIV drugs and malaria bednets while generating $1B+ in procurement savings. The Volume Guarantee Initiative supports the foundation’s strategic priorities and is aligned with program strategy teams. Representative past investments include: $230 million volume guarantee and prepayment loan to Biological E to support low-cost supply of pentavalent vaccine; $120 million volume guarantee to Bayer AG and Merck & Co. to support contraceptive implants in LMICs through increased production and lower prices; +$300 million combined volume guarantees to Mylan Laboratories and Aurobindo Pharma to support introduction and supply of new HIV drugs at affordable prices in LMICs; $100 million guarantee to UNICEF Vaccine Independence Initiative to accelerate LMIC access to essential health commodities. What You’ll Do
Working with colleagues from the foundation’s strategy program teams, the Investment Officer will: Lead and support deal teams through all stages of the investment process: initial screening, due diligence, financial analysis, investment structuring, negotiations, and portfolio management. Prepare and present investment recommendations to the foundation's Investment Committee and executive leadership when appropriate. Manage the investment portfolio to maximize charitable goals while mitigating risk and exposure to the foundation’s balance sheet. Build and maintain relationships with external partners in healthy commodity markets, including companies, donors, UN agencies, other guarantee partners and implementing partners. Ensure high-quality interactions and clear communications with internal and external stakeholders. Your Experience
We seek a candidate with a demonstrated interest in direct investing and a commitment to the foundation’s mission. The ideal candidate will have strong transactional experience, strategic problem-solving skills, and a collaborative mindset. Minimum five years of relevant experience in private investments or strategic partnership roles (private equity, venture capital, corporate development, business development). Public sector banking/finance or management consulting experience will be considered. Strong analytical and financial modeling capabilities to assess risk and return across investment structures. Excellent written and verbal communication skills for internal leadership and external partners on complex topics. Experience supporting cross-functional teams in assessing strategic/financial issues in evolving environments; expertise in multi-stakeholder transactions is preferred. Ability to work independently and as part of a team with diplomacy and relationship-building skills. Interest in global health, development, policy and advocacy; exposure to Global Health or Global Development programs is a plus. Demonstrated integrity and alignment with the Foundation’s values and mission. Must be able to legally work in the country where this position is located without visa sponsorship.
