The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at the University of California, Berkeley, invites tenure-track and tenured faculty applications in the area of Integrated, Automated Construction. Preference will be given to candidates who are early career or recently tenured. About the Department: The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) at UC Berkeley is a worldwide leader in developing engineering solutions to societal-scale challenges. Berkeley CEE conducts cutting-edge research in evolving and vital areas that address societal needs. Berkeley CEE establishes and advances the intellectual foundations of new fields of study. We develop theory and improve understanding, and provide tools and techniques for solving important new problems. The educational activities of Berkeley CEE focus on developing future leaders in the engineering profession, in academia, and in the broader societal context. Through individual and collective efforts, Berkeley CEE serves the needs of our College and University and provides technical expertise and service to other public, private, and professional entities. About the Position: We seek candidates who will lead civil and environmental engineering in the area of construction integration and automation. Programmatically, this search area encompasses critical needs in CEE that relate to resiliency and sustainability. A successful candidate will also be expected to leverage the College of Engineering faculty's existing strengths in artificial intelligence, automation, robotics, and infrastructure. This position prioritizes: Smart, Sustainable Cities and Regions Adaptive and Resilient Infrastructure Sustainable Air, Soil, Water and Energy Resources Construction integration and automation are revolutionizing the way we design, construct, maintain, and operate aboveground and underground facilities. They enable and accelerate the delivery of a built environment that is adaptive, sustainable, and resilient. The ability to perform comprehensive modeling, system-level sensing, analysis, and optimization will promote resiliency and sustainability in a wide array of civil engineering applications. As the boundary between design, construction, and operations blurs, new approaches are needed in construction engineering and management. The area of this search includes, but is not limited to: automation of construction operations, construction robotics, artificial intelligence focused on applications in construction (such as sensing for progress tracking, planning, and predictive maintenance) and human/machine interaction, modularization, offsite production, digital twins, virtual design and construction, next-generation multi-scale systems, and digitally fabricated, reconfigurable or redeployable materials and structures. New faculty are expected to pursue research excellence and contribute to the existing undergraduate and graduate educational program in Civil and Environmental Engineering, as well as develop new and innovative courses focused on construction. They are encouraged to collaborate with faculty throughout the Department, the College of Engineering, and the UC Berkeley Campus. The department is committed to addressing the family needs of faculty, including dual career couples and single parents. We are also interested in candidates who have had non-traditional career paths or who have taken time off for family reasons, or who have achieved excellence in careers outside academia.
