Overview
The Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law seeks a Counsel/Senior Counsel for the Voting Rights Project (VRP). This full-time, Washington, DC-based position reports to the Director, Voting Rights Project and focuses on litigation, election protection, and programmatic advocacy to promote voting rights for Black people and other people of color. Litigation
– Lead and participate in litigation before federal and state trial and appellate courts nationwide, including drafting pleadings and briefs, conducting discovery, and courtroom advocacy. Litigation Support
– Investigate matters, develop new cases, prepare amicus briefs, and collaborate with the Director and other VRP attorneys on litigation strategy. Programmatic Activities
– Support voting rights advocacy through written and oral advocacy, webinars and events, and support for partner organizations; provide guidance to implement VRP program work, including Election Protection. Leadership & Mentorship
– Provide guidance to more junior lawyers as needed and engage in public speaking and other advocacy related to voting rights. Diversity & Coalition Building
– Demonstrate a commitment to diversity and the ability to engage with diverse groups and coalitions in a community-driven approach. Travel as needed. Minimum Requirements and Competencies
Deep commitment to the advancement of racial justice and civil rights. Licensed to practice law in the District of Columbia, or the ability to waive in. At least 7 years of legal experience (Counsel) or 9 years (Senior Counsel), including litigation experience. Excellence in legal writing and a strong commitment to written advocacy of high quality. Strong oral communication, analytical, and research skills. Experience in developing complex civil rights litigation and taking/defending depositions. Experience with trial work in complex federal civil rights litigation and expertise in voting rights law. Strong organizational skills and attention to detail; ability to juggle multiple tasks. Ability to develop, maintain, and enhance relationships with diverse groups and coalitions; comfortable in a diverse environment. Supervisory Responsibility
This position has no supervisory responsibilities. Compensation & Benefits
Salary range: $104,000 – $160,500. The specific salary within this range is determined by experience and timing of law degree attainment. The organization offers a comprehensive benefits package including healthcare coverage (medical, dental, vision), parental leave, 403(b) with employer match, short- and long-term disability, and a monthly cell phone stipend.
