Critical Facilities Strategy Consultant Remote / Traveler
ZipRecruiter, Ashburn, Virginia, United States, 22011
Overview
Critical Facilities Strategy Consultant - Remote / Traveler. Our client is an Engineering Design and Commissioning Company specializing in MEP critical facilities design, commissioning, consulting and management. Focus areas include reliability, energy efficiency, sustainable design and LEED expertise for Enterprise, Colocation and Hyperscale clients. This opportunity supports career growth with projects involving leading-edge technology and competitive compensation and benefits. Responsibilities
Interpret electrical one-line drawings reflecting facility electrical systems from utility to point of distribution in a mission critical space (raised floor computer room). Determine the loading concept of redundant systems and calculate maximum load capability based on the redundancy deployed in the facility. Be familiar with industry standard redundancy ratings and requirements to obtain each level. Collect and record operational data from electrical components: utility meters, electrical switchboards, circuit breakers, UPS systems, power distribution units, control panels, generators, transfer switches, and metering stations. Collect and record operational data from mechanical equipment: chillers, control panels, CRAC/CRAH units, piping pressure and temperature gauges and related infrastructure metering. Analyze infrastructure designs to identify typical mission critical facility design approaches. Understand basic reliability concepts of redundancy, MTBF, MTTR, availability, maintainability, downtime and related metrics as they apply to electrical systems. Assess maintenance processes for UPS systems, high power battery systems, PDUs and ancillary electrical equipment. Evaluate electrical distribution systems including transformers, switches, switchgear, bus ducts, power cabling and PDUs. Assess high availability standby power systems including generators and transfer switches (including static transfers). Identify adverse energy usage patterns and recommend strategies to reduce energy consumption in facility infrastructure. Perform base power calculations (power, cooling, KVA, power factor, power per area). Assess condition and maintenance of large cooling systems (centrifugal chillers, screw compressors, reciprocating units) and heat rejection systems (open/closed cooling towers, air cooled chillers, glycol exchangers, and related equipment). Assess maintenance of water piping systems, pumps, valves and thermal storage equipment. Identify single points of failure and recommend risk mitigation to minimize impact. Develop critical facilities maintenance staffing plans and skill requirements. Operate and evaluate building monitoring and control systems for mission critical mechanical and electrical infrastructures. Assess the condition of raised floor areas in data centers following a detailed checklist. Understand Emergency Power Off (EPO) systems and their functions. Follow SOPs and MOPs related to technical materials and presentations. Evaluate fire detection and suppression systems including smoke detectors, VESDA, FM 200 gas suppression, Ansul, sprinklers and dry-pipe pre-action systems. Identify reliability factors impacting data center availability and synthesize cost-effective improvement recommendations. Evaluate security systems including perimeter, video, card access and biometric controls from room to rack level. Evaluate and improve maintenance management processes and change management processes. Contribute to planning sessions and workshops for overall facility improvements. Collaborate with Engineering/Design teams to develop conceptual designs for infrastructure expansion or capacity changes. Fully understand redundancy requirements and Tier levels; evaluate overall data center loading for greenfield options. Provide ROM estimates (±30%) for recommendations and present findings to customers at all levels from CIO/CFO/COO to engineers. Represent as an industry expert in symposia, journals and webinars. Manage project delivery: act as client partner and project executive, manage project scope, quality, and client relationship; work with analytic tools as required; manage projects to forecasted financials. Assist in developing financial analysis to show long-term costs and benefits of potential solutions. Analyze redundancies and loads following industry best practices; work safely in facility spaces. Qualifications
Applicable data center professional certifications. 10+ years of data center operational experience in hyperscale, colocation or enterprise facilities. BA/BS in Engineering or Computer Science is a plus. Competence in interpreting mechanical one-line drawings for facility HVAC systems in mission critical facilities. Competence in interpreting electrical one-line drawings from utility to distribution in raised-floor data centers, including meters, switchboards, UPS, PDU, control panels, generators and transfer switches. Familiar with electrical grounding and basic lightning protection concepts. Knowledge of Electrical Code requirements. IT Architecture familiarity with IT hardware (servers, network, cloud, storage). Client-facing with ability to interact with C-level to technicians; strong written and verbal communication skills. Strong organizational skills and prioritization ability. Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams). Basic financial analysis techniques (TCO, cash flow, CAPEX/OPEX budgeting). Ability to travel up to 50% (remote work otherwise); may require sustained travel for global client support. Residence within 60-90 minutes of a major airport. Military experience in electrical/mechanical roles is a plus (e.g., Navy Nukes, Seabees, Army, Air Force, Coast Guard). Submittal Instructions
