Job Description Salary: $20-25 per hour. Location: Kapolei, HI (Hybrid). Employment Type: Full-Time. Minimum Experience: Entry-level. Applicants must currently reside on Oahu. Relocation assistance is not available. Out-of-state applicants will not be considered. A petroleum inspector is a professional who is responsible for inspecting and monitoring the quantity and quality of petroleum products throughout the various stages of production, storage, transportation, and distribution. Inspectors use industry standards, regulations, and specifications to measure, sample and document their inspections. Their primary job is to physically take measurements, temperatures, and samples of bulk movements of petroleum products between suppliers and trading partners. Inspections are primarily performed on shore-based storage tanks and on marine vessels and barges. These measurements result in documentation that is used for the sale or exchange of bulk petroleum between the interested parties. In Hawaii, major players include Island Energy, Hawaiian Electric, PAR Hawaii, and several other global companies. A typical bulk transfer can exceed 1 million gallons at a time. Products typically inspected include crude oil, fuel oil, diesel, gasoline, naphtha, jet fuel, asphalt, and other refined components. This is an entry-level position where the company will provide training to teach a strong understanding of petroleum products, safety procedures, and industry regulations. A candidate must have excellent communication skills to report findings to clients, suppliers, and other stakeholders in a timely manner. The services provided to the industry are for oil producers, suppliers, and public utility companies that operate 24/7. The inspector’s schedule includes working nights, weekends, and holidays. Inspectors are guaranteed 40 hours of pay per week regardless of hours worked, with additional hourly pay for actual hours worked up to 40. Overtime over 40 hours applies at the standard Hawaii rate of 1.5x. Estimated first-year earnings are $48-55K. The company uses a combination of performance and tenure-based raises as the inspector advances through training and becomes fully qualified. The schedule is demanding and requires flexibility, but can be rewarding for those who enjoy a fast-paced environment. There is time off between assignments, allowing for personal appointments.
