This position leads and develops Nutrition Services personnel to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant food service operations. Responsibilities include delivering high-quality food and services to students, staff, and the district community while adhering to safety and health standards, meeting nutritional requirements, and addressing staffing and training needs. Essential Job Functions
Manage food service operations ensuring compliance with mandated nutritional requirements, certification standards, and health and safety regulations for all nutrition programs including but not limited to the National School Lunch Program, Breakfast After the Bell, Early Childhood Nutrition, Beyond the Bell Snack/Afternoon Snack, Catering, and Summer Meal Program. Supervise nutrition services staff. Lead and develop personnel by orienting, training, evaluating, and implementing progressive discipline as necessary. Ensure staff adherence to health, safety, nutritional standards, and that each kitchen meets the specific needs of the building it serves. Conduct site visits observing nutrition services operations ensuring adherence to planned menus, standardized recipes, HACCP protocol, and safety/health standards. Provide guidance on workflow improvements and assess training needs. Monitor meal input records, bank deposits, and other reporting functions ensuring accuracy and completeness; identify and resolve discrepancies promptly. Manage staff schedules to ensure adequate coverage for school meal periods, afterschool programs, and events such as catering. Serve as primary contact for resolving urgent nutrition services-related issues after hours; coordinate with security, direct staff for food retrieval, and communicate with the warehouse. Manage staff training needs and facilitate workshops addressing program requirements including food preparation, health standards, sanitation methods, point of sale system, and reporting requirements. Prepare documentation for state reimbursement claims and assist with other expense/reimbursement claims as directed. Assist staff with inventory orders for just-in-time product delivery to schools and meeting projected menu requirements. Develop and maintain communication tools and documentation for nutrition services staff (websites, newsletters, SOPs, SharePoint) to ensure efficient information sharing and recordkeeping. Annually participate in a national or state School Nutrition Association conference, representing the district and bringing back best practices. Perform other duties within area of responsibility to provide coverage of food service operations. Other Job Duties
Maintain and update knowledge and skills required for success in the position by participating in professional development activities as needed or assigned. Represent Nutrition Services in dealings with student groups and school personnel to uphold the district mission. Regular, reliable, predictable attendance is essential. Conditions
Requires travel to district and other sites within the community; occasional travel outside the district. May require extended or flexible hours. Ability to lift and carry up to 20 pounds regularly, up to 30 pounds infrequently, and 50 pounds with team lift techniques; may involve bending, squatting, kneeling, and other physical activities. Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience Bachelors degree in nutrition, dietetics, management, business, or closely related field, or demonstrated comparable experience and professional development. Three years of food service industry experience with child nutrition programs, volume processing, cook/chill production methods, factory supervision or central food processing plants. Supervisory experience required. Licenses/Special Requirements Must maintain all licenses and certifications. Valid Washington State Food Handlers Card. Certified Food Protection Manager certification required or to be completed within six months. Valid Washington State drivers license with reliable transportation. Fingerprints and successful WSP and FBI background clearance/sexual misconduct clearance. Knowledge, Skills And Abilities Knowledge of general accounting/bookkeeping procedures. Strong communication and organizational abilities. Experience operating commercial kitchen equipment. Ability to manage a kitchen staff and maintain accurate financial records. Proficient with spreadsheet software and recordkeeping. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds with team lift techniques. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships in a diverse setting. Flexibility to support multiple sites as needed.
