Overview
POSITION SUMMARY This Vice President of Revenue Cycle Management is responsible for providing leadership for all activities related to the revenue cycle operations management of the Johns Hopkins Health System and the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. This position covers Financial Clearance, Health Information Management, Patient Financial Services, and Revenue Cycle Director Liaisons at each hospital with a dotted line relationship to the International Revenue Cycle. The role aims to achieve five fundamental objectives: meeting annual cash targets, developing and implementing strategies to reach goals, directing revenue cycle services and programs, prudent receivables management, and delivering world‑class service to JHHS and SOM customers. The incumbent serves as the spokesperson for enterprise internal and external stakeholders, including governmental agencies, payer organizations, external auditors, and other healthcare providers. The role provides strategic vision to improve overall operational effectiveness.
Reporting Relationships
Reports to the JHHS Executive Vice President of Finance and CFO/JHM Senior Vice President and Chief Financial Officer, with a dotted line to the Vice Dean Finance and Administration at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Directs activities of approximately 800 team members in Registration, Central Financial Clearance, Health Information Management and the Business Office through staff at multiple levels.
Education & Experience
A Bachelor\'s Degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, or a related field; a Master\'s Degree in Business Administration or a related field is required. A minimum of ten (10) years in leadership management with progressive financial management experience and expertise in revenue cycle operations in a complex healthcare environment. Experience in significant redesign projects and/or management in a highly automated, centralized, or shared services environment. Experience using team building and quality management concepts to influence the work environment. Certification in CPAM or CHFP is strongly desired.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Organizational development, revenue, accounting, financial clearance, health information and receivable management principles. Hospital operations and patient flow to identify causes and effects impacting revenue cycle effectiveness. In-depth understanding of financial clearance, health information management, third party billing and collection processes for hospital and professional billing. Accounting principles affecting accounts receivable, including contract adjustments, write-offs, and revenue reclassification. Coding principles affecting claims accuracy and related software and documentation. Healthcare accounts receivable management within regulatory compliance. Understanding of Federal compliance and OIG initiatives. Technology options for revenue cycle settings (imaging, call centers, software tools, HIPAA transactions). General networking and IT considerations relevant to revenue cycle systems. Standard PC applications; LEAN and TQM principles. Leadership and mentoring skills for centralized and affiliate operations. Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to persuade and collaborate. Analytical and organizational skills for data-driven decision making. Excellent verbal and written communication for interactions with leadership, clinicians, payers, and departments.
Responsibilities
Set and execute revenue cycle strategy aligned with Johns Hopkins Medicine\'s overarching strategy and ensure integrated operations. Provide operational direction and oversight for all hospital and professional revenue cycle operations leaders, including but not limited to: Patient Access (Pre-Registration, Registration, Scheduling, Financial Counseling and Clearance, Admitting) Hospital and Professional Billing and Account Resolution Denials Prevention and Management Transaction posting and timely, compliant credit balance resolution Customer Service / Call Center Bad debt and financial assistance / enrollment Revenue Cycle vendor selection and performance management Optimization of Revenue Cycle technology and workflow Revenue Cycle audits, quality reviews and metrics Provider Enrollment/Credentialing Other duties as defined by Johns Hopkins Medicine Provide operational guidance, partnership, and leadership for Revenue Cycle adjacent activities, including: Revenue Integrity, Charge Description Master and Revenue Reconciliation Health Information Management, Coding, and Clinical Documentation Integrity Payer Relationship and Reimbursement Management with monitoring and reporting of payer performance Lead standardized Revenue Cycle processes across Johns Hopkins Medicine Develop, monitor and trend KPIs to guide management decisions Oversee annual operating and capital budgets for the Revenue Cycle Division Ensure achievement of Revenue Cycle KPIs and financial targets Foster relationships with executive and physician leadership across the enterprise Develop collaborative relationships with external organizations and professional associations Negotiate and establish shared services agreements to support organizational goals Ensure appropriate controls and accountability across the enterprise revenue cycle Stay current with regulatory, payer, and contractual changes impacting revenue cycle operations Chair or participate in committees to provide revenue cycle leadership Develop and deploy best-in-class Revenue Cycle structure and performance Facilitate communication and execution of enterprise business process and technology initiatives Problem Solving
Evaluate, monitor, and guide priorities and progress of JHHS revenue cycle functions. Provide senior management with performance information on revenue cycle and receivables. Lead process improvements to enhance efficiency and effectiveness of the revenue cycle. Lead consolidation planning for affiliates when applicable. Lead redesign initiatives and system-wide improvements as needed. Address systems and payer issues impacting targets and goals. Identify opportunities for efficiency through improved processes and automation. Sponsor implementation of software applications to improve revenue cycle functionality. Focus on integrated revenue cycle operations across entities to improve patient, physician, and stakeholder experience. Oversee continuous improvement of operations standards and use LEAN methodologies to reduce denials and waste.
Budget Responsibility
Administer expense budget for a large department. Present budget recommendations for approval by senior leadership. Monitor budget performance and explain variances. Authorize non-capital purchases per policy.
