Sr. Network Architect Location: Chicago, IL Responsibilities
The Sr. Infra. Architect will be responsible for designing and implementing robust network solutions using Cisco technologies, with a focus on Switching & Routing and Cisco Catalyst SD-WAN (Viptela). The role requires a deep understanding of network architecture. The candidate will work from the office during day shifts, ensuring seamless network operations and contributing to the company’s technological advancements. Provide high-quality, detailed Low Level Designs (LLD) for network and security; perform implementation with strong technical intelligence and effective communication and presentation skills. Hands-on experience in Cisco networking, firewalls, Cisco Viptela SD-WAN (vBond, vManage, vSmart), and Palo Alto Firewalls; perform specific device configurations of all networking equipment. Work as an individual contributor with the ability to self-direct, meet project schedules, and collaborate with team members and stakeholders to complete network projects. Take ownership of assigned tasks/projects and make design decisions aligned to client requirements and CIS Technical Standards; coordinate with CIS Architecture Review Board as needed. Lead advanced, complex technical projects or business issues requiring state-of-the-art knowledge; align with overall project management timelines and communication; provide leadership and contribute as an individual contributor for Network Architecture Projects. Demonstrate full-cycle network design responsibilities (assessment, design, HLD, LLD, build/implementation, testing) for data centers/remote offices and stores. Design and manage datacenter/remote office networks and CNF facilities; manage routing, switching, SD-WAN, MPLS, Internet, SIP trunks, and network security infrastructure. Configure and manage WLCs (Cisco 98XXX series) and network security controls (proxies, web filters, ACLs, NAC). Troubleshoot network performance issues, latency, and WAN/SD-WAN optimization; monitor health and reporting of network appliances and firewalls. Manage firewall policies across Cisco ASA, Cisco Firepower FTD, Fortinet, Palo Alto, and related VPN and access controls; handle SD-WAN solutions (Viptela, Fortinet, Meraki, Aruba, Prisma SD-WAN, VeloCloud, etc.). Design and configure segmentation and VLANs/VXLANs; perform firmware/software upgrades on network appliances and firewalls. Coordinate vendor dispatch management and manage load balancers (e.g., F5 or similar). Perform network traffic analysis; bandwidth management and latency reduction across WAN/SD-WAN/LAN and wireless environments. Experience with intrusion detection systems and IPS; automation and scripting (e.g., Python) a plus. Qualifications
Exceptional written and verbal communication; ability to present to executives and technical leaders with adaptable vocabulary and visuals. Demonstrated collaboration and stakeholder management; ability to work with diverse teams and achieve shared objectives. Solid understanding of security controls and frameworks. Knowledge of cloud networking technologies (AWS, Azure, private cloud) is a plus. Experience with high-availability networking designs, systems monitoring, incident handling, capacity planning, and performance tuning. Familiarity with regulatory compliance (SOX, PCI-DSS, HIPAA); FDA compliance or GMP experience a plus. Proficient in Word, Excel, Visio, PowerPoint. Education and Certifications
Minimum 15+ years’ experience in networking across data centers and remote offices; leading complex network projects. Nice-to-have current certifications (CISSP, CCSP, HPE/Aruba, Fortinet, Cisco (CNP, CCIE)). Bachelor’s degree in computer science, business, information systems, or related discipline. The annual salary for this position is between $131,000 and $161,000, depending on experience and qualifications. This role is eligible for Cognizant’s discretionary annual incentive program and stock awards, subject to applicable plans.
