Overview
IEM is the largest independent full-line manufacturer of custom electrical distribution and power quality equipment in North America. Formed in 1957, IEM has delivered customer-specific solutions to meet the ever-changing power requirements of growth industries in North America for over half a century.
At IEM, we’re not just growing – we're thriving! Our rapid expansion means new opportunities are always on the horizon. If you’re someone who gets excited by making an impact through interesting challenges, you’ll feel right at home.
Purpose of the Position IEM is currently seeking a Director of Environmental, Sustainability, and Governance (ESG). This role will report into our VP of Environmental, Health & Safety. The location for this role is to be based out of our Jacksonville office. However, we are open to remote candidates. The Director of ESG – Scope 1 & 2 Emissions is a critical leadership role responsible for driving enterprise-wide emissions reduction strategies across company-owned facilities, fleets, and energy consumption. Working within a private equity-backed industrial environment, this position is accountable for both tactical execution and strategic alignment with regulatory, financial, and customer ESG expectations — including Scope 1 (direct emissions) and Scope 2 (purchased electricity, steam, and heating/cooling). This individual will design and operationalize decarbonization initiatives that are economically viable and aligned with capital planning, while ensuring compliance with evolving ESG disclosure standards (SEC, CSRD) and sustainability frameworks (SBTi, TCFD).
Responsibilities 1. Scope 1 & 2 Emissions Strategy
Lead the creation of a comprehensive decarbonization roadmap focused on reducing:
Scope 1: Emissions from fuel combustion (e.g., process heat, generators, mobile sources)
Scope 2: Emissions from purchased electricity, steam, and heating/cooling
Identify and implement reduction levers such as:
Electrification of equipment and fleets
Energy efficiency retrofits (motors, HVAC, compressors)
On-site renewable energy or procurement of green power (RECs, PPAs)
Smart load management and heat recovery systems
Align with Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi) or equivalent pathways for target-setting and progress validation
2. Data, Systems, and Compliance
Develop site-level and enterprise-wide GHG inventories using the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard (Scopes 1 and 2)
Select and manage ESG data systems or carbon accounting platforms (e.g., Persefoni, Sphera, Enablon)
Ensure readiness for:
SEC Climate Disclosure
CSRD (EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive)
CDP Climate Questionnaire
Support third-party assurance, investor-grade audits, and limited assurance reviews
3. Capital Planning & Cost Analysis
Partner with finance and operations to build ROI models for decarbonization projects
Integrate emissions reduction priorities into annual capex planning cycles
Evaluate grants, tax credits (e.g., IRA 45L, 48), and green financing instruments to support investments
4. Operational & Cross-Functional Leadership
Work closely with plant managers, maintenance teams, and EHS to embed emissions reduction into facility-level KPIs
Develop energy management playbooks and training for frontline teams
Interface with procurement on low-carbon energy contracts, green tariffs, and emissions clauses in supplier agreements
5. Reporting & Stakeholder Engagement
Prepare board-level updates, investor materials, and ESG scorecard reporting
Respond to investor due diligence, private equity LP inquiries, and third-party ESG ratings (e.g., Sustainalytics, MSCI)
Lead or support development of ESG content in the company’s Annual or Sustainability Reports
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Environmental Science, Energy Systems, or related field (Master’s preferred)
10+ years of experience in sustainability, environmental engineering, operations, or ESG leadership
Proven expertise in Scope 1 & 2 emissions accounting, carbon mitigation technologies, and facility-level decarbonization
Strong working knowledge of:
GHG Protocol, SBTi, CDP, TCFD
SEC climate rule or CSRD regulatory requirements
Industrial energy systems and building operations
Experience in manufacturing, heavy industry, or multi-site operations
Familiarity with ESG platforms (e.g., EcoVadis, Measurabl, Persefoni, Sphera)
Demonstrated career ambition with a track record of growth and increasing responsibility; highly promotable with the potential to take on broader leadership roles within a fast-paced, high-growth organization
Open to travel
Attributes
Experience in a private equity-backed or publicly regulated industrial company
ESG or energy efficiency certifications (e.g., CEM, LEED AP, FSA Credential)
