Creston Enterprises, LLC
Organic & Sustainable Farm Manager for a Demonstration/Market Garden – Ground up
Creston Enterprises, LLC, California, Missouri, United States, 65018
Overview
Project – take an approximate two-acre area and set up a demonstration vegetable and flower garden with an outdoor kitchen & market space for the public and private groups. Once set up successfully there is room for growth. We currently have someone starting the set up and are looking for someone to help with the process and then take over running it when completed. The ranch is >2000 acres with an existing pasture-based cattle and sheep enterprise. The ground set aside for the farm consists of about 0.5 acres with some fruit trees and scattered vegetables and another 1.5 acres that is in grass forage (~2 acres total). We have ample additional ground for later expansion (10+ acres additional). Both areas have irrigation. The Ranch owner’s vision is for a “demonstration farm” that could serve for agrotourism as well as local product sales. They would initially like to see row crops put in but are open to fruit and berry crops and greenhouse/hoophouse operations as well. As the farm comes together, they are hoping to bring in organic interns and Cal Poly students for additional labor and specific projects. Responsibilities
Help with the process of setting up the demonstration garden, outdoor kitchen, and market space. Draft and finalize the design of each component and oversee the installation and eventual farming operation from start to finish. Provide hands-on experience in successfully growing plants and vegetables in this climate; focus on production with others managing marketing. Work with various equipment required, including tractors and farm equipment. Plan and implement practical irrigation/sprinkler systems. Assist in growing heirloom vegetables and fruits connected to the Central Coast or California. Prepare for eventual operation hand-over and potential expansion as growth opportunities arise. Support eventual housing or RV space arrangements if available. Qualifications
Local growing experience at the 5-10 acre scale or similar, with interest in building the growing side of a new farm. Experience with organic and sustainable growing methods, including alternatives to conventional insecticides and pesticides. Hands-on experience in growing plants and vegetables in this climate. Ability to draft and finalize designs and oversee installation and farming operations from start to finish. Practical knowledge of setting up irrigation and sprinkler systems and ability to operate farm equipment, including tractors. Willingness to work with interns and students (organic interns and Cal Poly students) as the project develops.
