Overview
The CDPH Environmental Health Laboratory Branch (EHLB) provides technical expertise and new measurement methods for air quality and biochemical speciation to identify emerging environmental pollutants and promote the health of all Californians. EHLB has a multidisciplinary staff of 30 experts in chemistry, toxicology, aerosol science, ventilation, engineering, and epidemiology. The EHLB Biochemistry Section conducts environmental testing for lead-poisoned children; biomonitoring of heavy metals, organic pollutants, and chemical metabolites; emerging contaminants identification; and intervention studies. The EHLB Air Quality Section provides measurements and technical guidance on indoor air pollutants, including control measures and infectious aerosols; emerging product emissions; community air monitoring; and emergency chemical exposures including wildfire smoke. Educational Pay Differentials
Candidates in one of these classifications, where a Master’s Degree is required to meet the minimum qualifications, shall receive an educational pay differential equivalent to 2% of their monthly base pay. Those where a Doctoral Degree is required to meet the minimum qualifications, shall receive an educational pay differential equivalent to 3% of their monthly base pay. Individuals with both a Master’s and Doctoral Degree will be given the best benefit in relation to salary and will be eligible for only one amount. Position Purpose
This position supports the California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) mission and strategic plan by strengthening the state environmental public health and laboratory testing program. Responsibilities
The candidate works under the general supervision of the Research Scientist Supervisor I. The Research Scientist II (Chemical Sciences) plans, organizes, and conducts scientific research studies of moderate scope and complexity related to source identification and quantitative assessment of human exposure to toxic metals, primarily lead in support of the CDPH Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program. The RS II performs chemical analyses to identify the concentration of lead in environmental and biological samples; prepares samples, standards, and reagents; interprets and reports laboratory sample results; and develops and documents Quality Assurance activities. Develops advanced techniques to improve screening, reduces reporting limits, and improves turnaround times for samples to quantify lead and other heavy metals as sources of human exposure.
