Overview

Engineer VI, EN-28: $10,071.00 - $12,855.00 per month. The posted salary range indicates potential compensation, not necessarily starting salary. New external hires typically begin at the initial step. Placement above the initial step may be considered based on position requirements, exceptional qualifications, budget availability, and other relevant factors, all requiring prior approval. Current Hawaii State Department of Education employees will be placed according to Department regulations and applicable collective bargaining agreements. The salary information includes shortage and school year differentials, if applicable. Responsibilities

Supervises the professional and nonprofessional personnel of a major engineering activity. Develops procedures and standards for carrying out specialty in the organization and represents the organization with authority on technical engineering matters within the area of specialization. May direct a large engineering section or assist in directing a large engineering division or district office as a technical specialist in planning, development, design and/or research. May lead the efforts of a team engaged in carrying out difficult or critical project assignments with emphasis in the area of specialization. Serves as a staff specialist responsible for overall control and coordination of a number of major and complex engineering projects or programs. Performs other duties as required. Basic Education/Experience Requirements

All applicants must meet one of the requirements specified in A, B or C below: A. Graduation from a school of engineering in an accredited college or university.

For some positions, graduation from an accredited college or university with a degree in physics, mathematics or chemistry may be accepted as qualifying, provided the applicant has had at least 15 credits in engineering sciences, common to all engineering disciplines, e.g. thermodynamics, statics, electrical science, applied mechanics, engineering drawing, strength of materials, etc. B. Administrative, professional or technical experience

involving the application and knowledge of the fundamental physical and mathematical sciences underlying professional engineering including physics, chemistry, mathematics through integral calculus and engineering sciences such as statics, dynamics, strength of material, thermodynamics, fluid mechanics and engineering drawing and other specialized courses to one of the branches of engineering. Such experience must be substantially equivalent to the knowledge and understanding gained by completion of a college training leading to a Bachelor's degree in engineering; or, C. A combination of college training in engineering and experience mentioned in B above substantively equivalent to completion of a college training leading to a Bachelor's degree in engineering. Experience Requirements

Except for the substitutions provided for in this specification, applicants must have had progressively responsible experience of the kind and quality described below and in the amounts shown. Engineering Experience (years) : 4* (for Engineer VI) Supervisory or Staff Advisory Exp (years) : 1 Administrative Exp (years) : 0 Total Exp (years) : 5 *For the Engineer VI level, at least one year of the required engineering experience must have been experience comparable to the next lower level. Engineering Experience : Progressive, professional engineering experience requiring application of basic physical and mathematical sciences and engineering sciences to solve theoretical or practical engineering problems. Examples of qualifying professional engineering experience include design of machines, equipment, structures or systems; development or construction specifications; original research; administration of engineering programs; interpretation of operational requirements; evaluation or survey of projects; and activities involving production, construction, regulation and testing where engineering decisions are central. Note: In some situations, experience not clearly professional engineering may be accepted if preceded by professional engineering experience and directly contributes to professional competence. For example, management or systems analysis roles may be recognized in preparation for higher-level responsibilities. Quality of Experience : For the Engineer VI level, at least one year of the required engineering experience must be comparable to the next lower level. The applicant's record must show the ability to perform the duties of the position. Supervisory or Staff Advisory Experience

A. Supervisory Experience : Professional engineering experience that includes training subordinates, coordinating workloads, evaluating performance, addressing difficult areas, and maintaining high standards of work and timely accomplishment. B. Staff Advisory Experience : Professional engineering experience as a technical expert in a specialized area or program function, performing staff advisory, consultative and/or reviewing work for a staff of specialists. Administrative Experience

Professional engineering experience including planning (including budget planning and justification), organizing, staffing, policy formulation and implementation, and directing a program providing staff services or assistance. Substitutions Allowed

Substitution of a Master's Degree in Engineering for Engineering Experience: A Master's degree may substitute for one year of Engineering Experience. Substitution of Supervisory, Staff Advisory Experience or Administrative Experience for Engineering Experience: Excess Supervisory, Staff Advisory or Administrative Experience of the type and quality described may be substituted for Engineering Experience on a year-for-year basis. Substitution of Administrative Experience for Supervisory, Staff Advisory Experience: Excess Administrative Experience of the type and quality described may be substituted for Supervisory or Staff Advisory Experience on a year-for-year basis. Professional Engineering License Requirement

For the Engineer IV and higher levels, applicants must possess a Hawaii State Certificate of Registration as a professional engineer. Driver\'s License Requirement

Applicant must have a current, valid driver\'s license. Lift/Carry Requirement

Applicants must be able to lift/carry objects weighing up to 25 pounds unassisted. Salary:

The advertised salary is based on full-time employment and includes shortage and school year differentials, if applicable. Requirements

Applicants must meet all the requirements for the position they are seeking as of the date of the application, unless otherwise specified. Unless specifically indicated, the required education and experience may not be gained concurrently. Calculation of experience is based on full-time, 40-hour workweeks. Part-time experience is pro-rated. Example: Twelve months of experience at 20 hours/week is equivalent to six months of experience, not one year. Also, hours worked in excess of 40 hours/week will not be credited. Temporary Assignment:

Claims of Temporary Assignment (TA) experience to meet the minimum qualification requirements must be verified and attached to the application using one of the options below: A copy of the applicant’s TA History Report or equivalent system-generated report; A signed letter from the applicant’s supervisor that includes the applicant’s name, TA job title, TA start and end dates, specific TA duties performed, and either the TA hours per week or total TA hours worked; or, Copies of the applicant’s signed SF-10 Forms.
