MULTIPLE POSITIONS WILL BE HIRED FROM THIS ANNOUNCEMENT. Location: Monroe Regional Juvenile Detention Center, 5503 College Rd, 1st floor, Key West, Florida 33040 Contact Person: Terrance Lopez (305) 293-1500 Minimum Bi-Weekly Rate of Pay: $1,751.77 Bi-Weekly plus CAD of $92.30 bi-weekly (total $1,844.07). Internal promotion into the position will be filled at the minimum of the pay grade or up to 5% of the employee’s current rate, whichever is higher, per current spending restrictions.
Position Description
This is a highly responsible position in the criminal justice system. The employee is expected to perform duties in a responsible manner, demonstrate leadership by being a positive role model for staff, youth and the community, and treat all persons with dignity and respect. Responsibilities include adhering to agency policies, maintaining a safe and secure environment for youth and staff, and ensuring a zero-tolerance atmosphere for detained youth escapes, abuse, sexual harassment and inappropriate conduct by staff. Assists in the operation of a secure detention center, ensuring safe custody of detained youth while providing their constitutional rights with attention to legal, medical and mental health issues. Assists the supervisor to ensure detained youth services and programming comply with court orders, departmental policies, procedures, and QA standards. Successfully completes training to maintain proficiency in dispensing medications to youth; may distribute medication in the absence of a medical authority or facility nurse. Performs duties in Master Control, admissions, releases, and transportation as needed. Supervises youth in activities, using verbal directives, counseling and Protective Action Response (PAR) as required, in accordance with policies and procedures. Inspects facility, youth, visitors and packages for contraband. Trains/coaches employees and orients them to policies and procedures. In the absence of the supervisor, assumes acting supervisor responsibilities. Writes reports and maintains records of incidents, youth movements, and violations of procedures, rules and statutes. Prepares youth for court appearances, transports and escorts to medical, criminal justice, social services and judicial facilities as required. Uses security and emergency equipment to ensure safety. Performs 10-minute/5-minute checks or continuous surveillance for youth in confinement or identified as suicidal. Assesses information from the Juvenile Justice Information System and maintains detained youth counts as directed. Attends and completes required training, including DJJ Direct Care Training Policy; may be required to perform CPR, AED and First Aid in emergencies. Attends required meetings. Maintains a valid Driver License and reports changes within 72 hours. Complies with Florida Prompt Payment Compliance Law. Performs other related duties as required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Ability to communicate both orally and in writing. Ability to perform basic math (add, subtract, multiply and divide). Ability to prepare and maintain reports and records. Ability to work effectively with youth, co-workers, supervisors and the public. Knowledge of good hygiene and facility policies and procedures. Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions in a timely manner. Ability to determine appropriate level of force and observe changes in youth behavior. Ability to provide constructive feedback to correct behavior. Knowledge of housekeeping tasks related to sanitary conditions of the facility.
Special Notes
All prospective candidates will be subject to sex offender checks, criminal background checks, and pre-employment drug screening for direct care positions. DJJ participates in E-Verify. A valid driver’s license is required; out-of-state license holders must obtain a Florida license within 30 days of hire. Driving records requirements apply for transportation of youth. Candidates must be certified per the State of Florida DJJ direct care training policy or obtain certification within 180 days of employment. Ergometric IMPACT Assessment may be required for some candidates during the interview phase. Florida law requires compliance with male/female ratio guidelines; Veterans’ Preference is available per Florida Statutes and related rule. Documentation is required with submission.
