Position Description

America Votes is looking for a Data Scientist to join our Analytics team for the 2026 cycle and beyond. The ideal candidate has prior experience as a data scientist or analyst in an electoral context, a strong foundation in statistics and machine learning, and a vision for how data can answer questions around targeting, program logistics, and resource allocation.

For the Data Scientist role, we seek a teammate who can expand our analysis toolkit and help deliver insights faster and with more rigor. This is a permanent position reporting to the Deputy National Data and Targeting Director and is union-eligible.

Responsibilities

Lead analysis projects from ideation to presentation: collaborate with AV staff across departments to understand questions, plan analyses, and share results via decks, memos, and visualizations. Bring new methods to existing questions: apply machine learning to analyze data at a national scale and surface insights about program strategy and tactics. Improve products and systems with an eye toward automation and rigor; collaborate with analytics, data support, and engineering to implement changes. Evaluate and guide the predictive models used in voter contact work, with emphasis on race equity considerations. Serve as an analytics leader and coach: stay current with research and best practices, pair programs, train staff, and contribute code for advanced projects. Ensure racial equity is integrated into all data work and advance America Votes' equity commitments. Additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Must Haves At least two cycles of experience in a data role at a political campaign or progressive organization (analyst, engineer, or data scientist). Expert SQL skills and experience with a cloud data warehouse; ability to write and optimize complex queries and know when SQL is not the right tool. Very strong R or Python skills with clean, modular, well-documented code. Track record of applying statistics and machine learning to messy data and solving problems at scale; able to select methods and explain results to stakeholders. Creativity balanced with solid data science foundations; capable of evaluating and combining multiple methods for project needs. Service-oriented approach prioritizing collaboration, supporting staff and partners, centering equity, and building for the long term. Ability to work irregular campaign-style hours and travel as needed, especially during peak electoral months. Nice to Haves Experience with geospatial data, causal inference, or principal component analysis. Experience creating complex data products; familiarity with Streamlit or similar frameworks is a plus. Experience scaling and productionizing ML models (MLOps, automated data ingestion and model updates).

Location & Compensation

This position is hybrid and location-flexible. Some travel and reasonable access to an airport is required. Offices are located in DC and multiple states; America Votes operates in a hybrid fashion. Compensation : Salary between $100,000 - $115,000, dependent on experience. Benefits include comprehensive medical, dental, and vision premiums for employees, life insurance, long-term disability, a cell phone stipend, professional development funds, parental leave, and a 401(k) after four months of continuous service. Paid time off includes vacation, sick leave, personal days, federal holidays, and organizational time off during year-end closure. This position is represented by the America Votes Workers Union.
