Job Summary

The Assistant General Counsel reports directly to the General Counsel and provides legal support across a wide range of University matters. This role assists the General Counsel and other Associate General Counsels in identifying and assessing legal risks and issues, offering clear, practical recommendations to ensure compliance with local, state, and federal laws and regulations. Responsibilities include legal research and analysis, interpreting the legal and regulatory framework under which the University operates, as well as drafting, reviewing, and negotiating contracts. The role involves providing legal and policy guidance in areas such as legislative implementation, first amendment and academic affairs matters, student affairs, athletics, business and finance, real estate and construction, and procurement, and other areas. Additional duties may be assigned by the General Counsel based on institutional needs.

Department Overview

The Office of General Counsel (OGC) is Boise State University’s law office consisting of in-house attorneys and support staff. OGC acts as an in-house counsel to, and represents all legal interests of Boise State University.

Level Scope

Recognized subject matter expert who knows how to apply theory and put it into practice with in-depth understanding of the professional field with limited oversight from managers. Independently performs the full range of responsibilities within the function; requires deep job knowledge of areas typically obtained through higher education combined with experience. Manages large projects or processes and faces problems difficult and often complex; analyzes problems/issues of diverse scope and determines solutions. May manage programs that include formulating strategies and administering policies, processes, and resources; functions with a high degree of autonomy. Influences others regarding policies, practices and procedures.

Essential Functions

95% of Time Assistant General Counsel will:

  • Provide professional legal advice and consultation by:
    • Interpreting the constitutional, statutory and regulatory framework in which the University operates
    • Conduct research and prepare memorandum as requested by other attorneys in the office
    • Provide legal advice and support to the General Counsel on various matters including University policy, regulatory compliance, and contract negotiations
    • Reviewing policies university for legal compliance and monitoring changes to the policies for legal compliance and implications
    • Review and negotiate contracts or business transactions
  • Other related duties as assigned to support University operations

5% of Time: Perform other duties as assigned

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

  • Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills, including the ability to analyze and identify legal issues under supervision of the attorneys in the Office of General Counsel, familiarity with legal terminology.
  • Ability to work independently and self-regulate multiple priorities/tasks and perform work with attention to detail.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both in writing and orally, including demonstrable ability to edit and write business and legal correspondence using proper grammar and punctuation as demonstrated in application materials.
  • Excellent drafting/proofing/editing skills and ability to perform and communicate effectively under pressure.
  • Ability to meet project deadlines while adapting to immediate demands.
  • Working in an environment that requires maintaining strict confidentiality while managing highly sensitive documents and information.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving skills and a strong sense of curiosity.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (law) degree from an ABA accredited institution, with high academic standing and admission to practice law in Idaho (or eligibility for prompt admission)
  • Two (2)+ years of legal experience working as an attorney in a law firm or similar legal setting.

Salary and Benefits

Salary range is $97,884.80 to $120,000 annually and is commensurate with experience. Boise State University provides a best-in-class benefits package, including (but not limited to):

  • 12 paid holidays AND the University is closed between Christmas and New Year’s (requires use of 3 vacation days)
  • Between 12-24 annual paid vacation days for full-time Professional and Classified staff depending on position type and years of service
