Toole Design Group is looking to hire an experienced and talented full-time Principal Civil Engineer in Providence, RI. This engineering position focuses on final design construction plan development and corridor modeling. A Day in the Life of a Principal Engineer

As a Principal Engineer, you will lead and mentor an interdisciplinary team to deliver multimodal transportation infrastructure. Projects range from roadway reconstructions and streetscapes in urban areas to trail projects in suburban and rural settings. You will use AutoCAD for project production and supervise others. Your role includes managing projects through design development, review, bid packages, permitting, and construction questions. Ensuring high-quality project delivery is key.

You will assist Engineering Group Managers and the Engineering Director in managing company projects in the region. You will engage with clients and colleagues across disciplines, from design to construction. You will also participate in business development, project pursuits, and quality initiatives, providing innovative solutions to complex projects.

Work Schedule for a Principal Engineer

This full-time role typically involves a hybrid schedule of 40 hours weekly, with one day in our Boston office and the rest remote from Providence, RI. We provide necessary equipment for remote work. The Boston office is centrally located, accessible by transit, bike, and on foot.

Requirements:

  • A PE license with the ability to obtain in RI and/or MA
  • A bachelor's or master's degree in civil engineering or relevant field
  • At least 13 years of relevant experience
  • Experience as a project manager or design lead
  • Broad civil engineering knowledge, especially in roadway and drainage design, geometric design, 3D modeling, and accessible public spaces
  • Experience developing construction documents
  • Interest in multimodal and active transportation design
  • Experience managing staff
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD or MicroStation and Civil 3D, GEOPAK, or InRoads
  • Experience managing projects in the Northeast
  • Experience in proposals and scope/fees development
  • Interest in business development

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Construction management exposure
  • Stormwater infrastructure analysis and design experience
  • Stormwater software skills like HydroCAD or HydroFlow
  • Knowledge of right of way/easement processes
  • Traffic engineering and signal design experience
  • Advanced multimodal roadway design and NACTO guidance familiarity
  • Understanding of MUTCD standards
  • Experience with transit projects and Complete Streets initiatives
