Job Description – Chief Engineer
Supervise and direct maintenance staff on shift and monitor performance of assigned responsibilities. Perform and/or direct the performance of all maintenance departmental service requests, ensuring that work performed in these areas is accomplished efficiently with a minimum amount of disruption and inconvenience. Check malfunctioning equipment and ascertain corrective action required to restore to satisfactory operating condition. Provide training and supervision aimed at expanding the capabilities of the operations staff. Chief engineer must be able to work in a 24/7 environment and available to support after hour calls and work tasks.
Responsibilities
- Demonstrate proper use and care of tools and instruments, provide hands-on instruction in basic maintenance, safety, and troubleshooting procedures, and recommend relevant outside engineering courses. Maintain a professional appearance and demeanor.
- Supervise and implement the preventative maintenance program, including scheduling with minimal disruption to building services and delegating tasks to qualified staff.
- Order parts and equipment required for repair, maintenance and installation of new equipment and facilities, and maintain inventory.
- Direct the performance of contracted maintenance work, ensuring timely completion and overseeing equipment warranty obligations by installers and contractors, and securing manuals and drawings.
- Maintain, monitor and perform preventive maintenance and continuous operation of building systems (fire/life safety, mechanical, electrical, emergency backup, hot water systems) and analyze system operation to diagnose and correct malfunctions.
- Ensure safe storage, usage and disposal of hazardous materials; maintain a clean and safe workplace.
- Maintain operating inventory of tools and supplies and prepare purchase-order requests; develop sources for stock materials and perform periodic checks.
- Lead the engineering team to operate machinery and systems safely, efficiently and cost-effectively, aiming for 100% uptime and protecting the client’s assets.
- Create and implement critical procedure libraries (EOP/SOP/MOP) and oversee contractor activities within the building.
- Keep records of rounds, readings, logs and data sheets; provide advance training and notification to contractors regarding building critical functions and incident contacts.
- Understand and comply with emergency escalation procedures and ensure Working in Critical Areas Standards are understood by staff and contractors; enforce Critical System Standards.
- Perform additional job duties as requested; become a member of International Union of Operating Engineers Local 399 IUOE.
Minimum Requirements
- Hands-on experience in a data center/critical facility, including UPS systems, emergency generators, switchgears and building monitoring systems.
- High School diploma or GED equivalent
- 5+ years related work experience, including supervisory experience
- Operating Engineers license (SMA) or equivalent
- Certification as a Universal Technician for CFCs a plus
- Working knowledge of computer applications including Word and Excel
- Demonstrated verbal/written communication skills
- Proven record of excellent internal and external customer service
Estimated total compensation for this position: 116,313.00 – 116,313.60 USD per year
The total compensation range is an estimate and not guaranteed. An employment offer is based on an applicant's education, experience, skills, abilities, geographic location, internal equity and alignment with market data.
