Position Summary This position provides care and services to patients at risk for or diagnosed with a genetic disorder. Educates and advocates for patients and assists them in coordinating necessary medical treatment/genetic testing and provides them with resources when needed.

Duties & Responsibilities

Evaluate and counsel pediatric, perinatal and adult patients and their families on genetic disorders and diseases pertaining to them.

Review patient records and test results. Obtain and evaluate patient family history to determine patients at risk.

Discuss etiology, diagnosis, management, and results with patients and patients' partners. Recommend and discuss available testing options.

Follow up on patient medical appointments and lab testing. Review test results and recommends follow-up testing, if needed.

Determine appropriateness of genetic testing. Provide and secure consent and coordinates the genetic testing.

Assist in the interpretation of the genetic test results.

Deliver educational lectures on genetics to residents, students, fellows, and medical personnel at UIC and at other medical centers.

Performs other related duties and participates in special projects as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Master's degree in Genetic Counseling or in Medical Genetics from an accredited genetic counseling training program.

Illinois Genetic Counselor License or eligible to obtain Illinois licensure

ABGC (American Board of Genetic Counseling) Certification or have active candidate status and be able to secure their certification within the period as designated by the ABGC.

Knowledge of medical genetics and genetic counseling, and knowledge of psychosocial aspects including risk perception, support mechanisms, coping, etc.

Excellent communication, presentation, organization, and computer/pc skills, to include proficiency in Microsoft Office and other related software programs.
