We are seeking a detail-oriented and experienced
Senior Accountant
to join our growing team at a leading General Contractor. The Senior Accountant is responsible for managing day-to-day accounting operations, ensuring compliance with GAAP, and providing financial insight into construction job performance. This role requires experience in construction accounting, including job cost tracking, cost reporting, WIP (Work-in-Progress) reporting, subcontractor billing, and cash flow management. Key Responsibilities Manage the general ledger and ensure accurate month-end and year-end closes Prepare and analyze monthly financial statements and job cost reports Maintain and reconcile construction job cost records, including labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractor costs Assist in the preparation of Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules and revenue recognition under percentage-of-completion method Manage Accounts Payable/Receivable functions related to job costing and vendor compliance Coordinate billing cycles, including AIA payment applications, change orders, and retainage tracking Partner with project managers and operations team to review project budgets, forecasts and variance analysis Assist with annual financial statement audit and prepare supporting documentation Develop and improve accounting procedures and internal controls Mentor junior accounting staff and support cross-functional collaboration
Specific Duties
Month Close and related journal entries Month-end accruals Collect, review, and enter cost report information monthly Bank Reconciliations Maintain Fixed asset schedules Credit Card entries and overview Assist with year-end audit requests Assist with union audit requests Help prepare and improve monthly reporting packages Help maintain and monitor monthly cost allocations Insurance allocations and marketing, compliance, accounting cost allocations (Overhead allocations) Readily available to provide ad hoc reporting Work with operations/project management teams on accounting initiatives Develop/refine/improve financial reporting models Help correct issues with billings within the system Help correct issues with invoices within the system Assist with cost adjustments on jobs Readily available to investigate costs on jobs for various Project managers Collaborate with compliance and marketing for reporting requirements
Position Requirements and Qualifications
Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA preferred but not required) 5+ years of accounting experience, with at least 2 years in construction or project-based accounting Strong understanding of GAAP and job cost accounting principles Experience with construction accounting software (e.g., Vista by Viewpoint, Sage 300, Procore, or similar) Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and financial reporting tools Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills Ability to meet tight deadlines and handle multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment Familiarity with AIA billing, WIP schedules, retainage, and contract compliance requirements Experience with multi-state compliance and job setup Familiarity with subcontractor management, including pay-when-paid structures Knowledge of union and certified payroll requirements Previous experience in a general contracting or self-performing contractor environment preferred
