Lead Software Engineer / Flight & Ground Systems
Modern Technology Solutions, Inc. (MTSI) is seeking a Lead Software Engineer to join our team at Kirtland Air Force Base, NM, to support execution of the Space Systems and Hardware Integration for Novel Space Experiments (SSHINE) program supporting Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL)/ Integrated Experiments and Evaluation Division (RVE). This position requires a strong understanding of space requirements, testing, and operational environment. The position will provide software engineering to support the RVE mission in order to drive data-informed decisions at speed, maximizing the Services flexibility and efficiency in delivering space-based capabilities for the Joint Force and the nation. A successful candidate is a self-starting proven leader and problem solver with the ability to deliver superior results as part of a high-profile, fast-paced environment. The successful candidate will possess initiative, excellent communication skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams. Your essential job functions will include but may not be limited to: Development of numerous space and ground system algorithms and software, such as anomaly prediction and detection; data aggregation and trending analysis; and vehicle fault detection systems; directly supporting the RVE mission. Troubleshoot development and operational incidents, identify root causes, fix and document problems, and implement preventive measures. Direct support to software development tasks for the RVE Ground systems requirements. Manage the software configuration control processes, ensure that relevant stakeholder requirements are met. Evaluate and make recommendations on adjudication of software deficiency reports. Provide expert consultation on quality assurance and software safety practices to a government/industry team. Provide software development expertise to anomaly investigations and system development IPTs. Optimize system performance and troubleshoot issues related to container orchestration, networking, and resource management. Advise the development of hardware and software functionality and performance specifications. Work with stakeholders to develop test plans and evaluate results. Provide multi-domain model building and simulation assistance for space sensors, systems, and mission CONOPS development. Collaborate with software development teams to architect, deploy, and maintain applications. Support model and analysis tool software development, perform data acquisition, and conduct detailed analysis. Stay up to date with and research industry best practices, trends, and emerging technologies for possible implementation. Participating in technical discussions, trade studies and working groups. Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including product management, UX/UI designers, and quality assurance, to define and deliver software solutions that meet customer needs. Provide regular updates, reports, and presentations on software development and sustainment progress, achievements, and challenges to stakeholders. Design in process automation and scripts for provisioning, monitoring, and managing software deployments and to reduce manual steps and improve reusability of solutions. Communicating highly technical problems and solutions from engineers to senior USSF and AFRL leadership. Working as a trusted, strategic partner with the customer by delivering actionable insights about emerging technologies as well as with technically-minded external partners.
Qualifications
10+ years of systems engineering experience related to space and/or ground systems. Experience with DoD space missions and programs. Knowledge of DoD Systems Engineering best policies, practices, procedures. Experience with duties or assignments specifically in support of engineering relevant to space programs. Ability to understand DoD/USSF systems engineering processes and documentation. Ability to understand working with military or DoD civilian clients and managing professional relationships.
Education
Required: Bachelor's degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM), Information Technology, computer science or similar from a regionally accredited institution. Desired: Masters degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics (STEM), Information Technology, computer science or similar from a regionally accredited institution.
Clearance
Active Top Secret clearance with SCI eligibility.
Location & Travel
Full-time, on site in vicinity of Albuquerque, NM and travel up to 25% of time within the continental United States for design and test requirements reviews, briefings, conferences and other related activities.
