SPACE EXPLORATION TECHNOLOGIES CORP, Hawthorne, California, United States, 90250
Overview
Software Engineer, Ground Systems (Starshield) Hawthorne, CA Starshield leverages SpaceXs Starlink technology and launch capability to support national security efforts. While Starlink is designed for consumer and commercial use, Starshield is designed for government use, with an initial focus on earth observation, communications, and hosted payloads. The Starshield software team is building highly reliable in-space mesh networks, designing secure systems to guarantee access to space, and developing next-gen communication and sensing software. We seek versatile, motivated, and collaborative engineers who love solving problems and want to make an impact on an inspiring mission. Aerospace experience is not required to be successful here candidates from diverse backgrounds are encouraged to apply. Our team designs vehicle systems at every phase of development, builds tools to work more efficiently, and creates software that is secure, reliable, and autonomous. Software engineers are responsible for the life cycle of the software they create, including development, testing, and operational support. Responsibilities Create highly reliable software systems that control hundreds of satellites in low Earth orbit See software through from requirements to prototyping, development, testing, and on-orbit rollout Implement networking technologies to direct data across satellites, ground operations centers, and users Build automated ground-based software systems that integrate smart data processing with command and control of the satellites Develop tools for test execution across multiple environments: virtualized hardware, hardware-in-the-loop, and vehicle-in-the-loop testing Invent systems enabling more frequent and reliable software deployment, test execution, and data analysis within a continuous integration and release framework
Basic Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, math, or a related scientific discipline; OR 2+ years of professional software development experience in lieu of a degree Development experience in C, C++, or Python, or full stack software development experience
Preferred Skills and Experience
Knowledge of computer architecture and networks Strong debugging, performance optimization, and unit testing skills Ability to work effectively and creatively in a dynamic environment with changing needs Ability to work independently and in a team, take initiative, and communicate effectively Experience with Python or C++ and Linux programming Production experience with containerization technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes) Experience with relational databases (PostgreSQL, CockroachDB, or similar)
Additional Requirements
Active security clearance may provide opportunities to work on sensitive SpaceX missions; if so, you may be subject to pre-employment and random drug testing Willingness to work extended hours and weekends as needed
Compensation and Benefits
Pay Range: Software Engineer/Level I: $120,000 - $145,000 per year; Software Engineer/Level II: $140,000 - $170,000 per year Your actual level and base salary will be determined on a case-by-case basis based on job-related knowledge, education, and experience.
