Churchill Downs Racetrack (CDRT) is located on 175 acres with a one-mile dirt track, a 7/8-mile turf track, a stabling area, and seating for approximately 60,000 guests. The stable area has barns for 1,400 horses and a 114-room dormitory for backstretch personnel. CDRT hosts Derby Week events including the Kentucky Oaks and conducts Thoroughbred horse racing across three race meets annually.

Job Summary

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsibilities
  • The HR Manager will work directly with the Senior Director to support and quickly respond to the needs of all internal and external customers.
  • Perform all duties related to employment for seasonal, part- and full-time employees from posting positions to screening, offer letters and onboarding.
  • Enter and maintain data in the electronic human resource information system. This includes employment and personal data, leave information and compensation updates.
  • Work with Sr. Director to discuss and settle disputes and grievances of employees covered under the Collective Bargaining Units at Churchill Downs Racetrack. We have 3 separate contracts.
  • Assist with conducting and documenting employee relations investigations, recommend appropriate next steps based on established company policy and precedent, and ensure proper resolution as necessary.
  • Assist Managers with creating, editing, and reviewing company job descriptions.
  • Assist with coaching managers and employees through corrective action, documenting as appropriate.
  • Respond to unemployment claims and verifications of employment.
  • Manage annual and new hire Racing License request process, including acting as the point of contact with the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission and ensuring compliance at all opportunities.
  • Administer and manage all requested leaves to include FMLA, workers compensation, short- and long-term disability and personal.
  • Assist with the planning, coordination, and execution of events related to employee engagement that include Benefits Fair, annual flu shots, participation in local job fairs, employee service awards, engagement activities, and other events as requested.
  • Provide and prepare both verbal and written correspondence on behalf of the department to include Track Talk which is put out weekly.
  • Maintain Seniority Lists and the Organization Chart to reflect any staffing changes.
  • Oversee I-9 documentation and audit process, tuition reimbursement, and other annual HR projects.
  • Conduct and document exit interviews with all voluntary (full time) terminations.
  • Facilitate New Hire Orientation and benefit meetings as needed.
  • Assign and track required training.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited school preferred.
  • 2-4 years related experience in Human Resources.
  • Professional certification in Human Resources preferred.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
  • The employee will be required to sit for extended periods of time.
  • The employee may be required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, reach, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear.
  • The employee may be asked to occasionally lift up to 20 lbs.
  • The employee may be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • The noise level in the work environment is moderate.
