Job Story The WSU Geology Department is seeking a motivated student employee for a paid Applied Learning Experience (ALE) focused on cataloguing our Rock & Mineral collection. This opportunity offers skill-building in rock and mineral identification, digitization of records, and database development-essential for careers in museum operations and natural science collections. Students from geology and data science backgrounds are encouraged to apply and will benefit from cross-training in both disciplines. Help preserve and modernize the Geology Department's Rock & Mineral collection while preparing for future employment in the field!

Job Summary A student assistant will carry out administrative and technical tasks requested by a supervisor. Depending on the area the student assistant is employed in, they may assist and mentor other students or provide support throughout the campus in various forms.

Job Duties Digitize collection records and provenance documents for the Rock & Mineral collection.

Locate, identify, and catalog rock and mineral specimens.

Confirm sample IDs, add new entries with required metadata, and update the database as needed.

Photograph mineral samples and digitize provenance cards for digital records.

Learn proper repair and storage techniques to protect sensitive geological materials.

Develop and maintain a Microsoft Access or SQL database to catalog specimens, including creating a data dictionary.

Organize and maintain specimen history files, and produce user guides and training materials for database users.

Required Education High School diploma or equivalent. Enrolled in a minimum of 6 credit hours at Wichita State University.

Additional Requirements Student MUST be able to fluently read English if handwritten in cursive script. Student must have basic Excel skills and must have passed GEOL320 (or course equivalent) with a grade of "C+" or better.

Required Experience This is specific to each position and department. See additional requirements and/or preferences.

Preferred Qualifications Preference will be given to candidates with a basic understanding of Microsoft Access and/or SQL.

Physical Requirements Ability to remain in a stationary position. Ability to operate a computer and other office equipment including but not limited to phone, printers, copiers, and calculators. Ability to communicate with others and accurately exchange information.
