POSITION PURPOSE:
The EC Direct Support personnel work under the supervision of the school principal and the assigned Exceptional Children's case manager to provide individual assistance and support that allows a student to participate in and access the curriculum and educational environment. The EC Direct Support personnel collaborates with assigned teacher and/or school personnel to encourage maximum student performance and develop independence across the continuum of the school day. The EC Direct Support personnel should demonstrate appropriate professional behavior and communication throughout the school day. The EC Direct Support personnel are assigned / reassigned to school locations by Exceptional Children Services based on individual student needs.
U MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS U:
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
General knowledge of the practices, methods and techniques used in the teaching of the special education population General knowledge of the daily routines of the classroom General knowledge of student handbook rules and regulations General knowledge of procedures to follow in an emergency General knowledge of the principles of organization and administration General knowledge of the curriculum for the assigned grade Demonstrate appropriate verbal and written communications to school staff, parents, and students Ability to maintain files and information Skill in the use of classroom and instructional equipment Ability to constantly monitor the safety and well-being of students, particularly when a student is participating in an inclusive activity Ability to motivate students Ability to operate audio visual, standard office, word and data processing equipment Ability to operate adaptive equipment Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with teachers, peers, parents, students, and administrators EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE
Associate Degree; or Minimum of 48 semester hours of college coursework; or Pass Work Keys Assessment CERTIFICATION AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
Must possess a valid driver's license issued by the NC Department of Motor Vehicles CPR Certification First Aid Certification CPI Training annually U PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Three (3) to five (5) years of experience working in an EC classroom/environment Training in assisting students with special needs Able to obtain a North Carolina Class A or Class B Commercial Driver's License with school bus certification and P&S endorsements
U ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
:
Accompanies and/or supports the student throughout the school day Maintains the safety of the student Assists with basic human functions such as toileting, eating/feeding and personal care Assist with implementation of behavior management systems, techniques, and/or individualized behavior plans Collaborates with the supervising teacher to administer and/or monitor any therapy, medication and/or special treatment required by the student while adhering to the guidelines of the Randolph County School System Assists student with various needs including mobility throughout the school campus, transferring to and from wheelchairs/toilets and other equipment, utilization of communication systems and other technology Performs other EC duties as directed by supervising teachers / administrators in cases of student absence or when student is engaged with other school personnel Provides targeted reinforcement, modeling or instruction to meet IEP goals and access the general curriculum Preparing instructional materials and modifications to the curriculum as directed by school staff Collects written data to monitor progress Participates in training with school personnel and implements procedures covered in trainings Participates in training to meet specific student needs (formal and/or informal) Adhere to confidentiality regulations Maintains and encourages student self-advocacy Communicates questions and concerns (parents, student, or other school staff) through the supervising school personnel
WORKING CONDITIONS
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Work is considered medium physical work requiring the exertion of up to 50 pounds of force. Position entails significant walking, bending, standing, stooping and possible interventions in order to maintain a safe learning environment. Assignment may require the ability to physically move students or equipment, position students in specialized equipment, perform self-care/toileting as needed and/or perform skilled nursing procedures. (e.g. feeding tubes)
WORK ENVIRONMENT
Employees in this position are required to work in indoor and outdoor environments, and come into direct contact with RCSS staff, students and the public.
