Public Health Environmental Health Specialist-In-Training

This position is responsible for completing assigned work to prevent human injury and illness by identifying and evaluating environmental sources and hazardous agents and by limiting exposures to hazardous physical, chemical, and biological agents in air, water, soil, food, and other environmental media or settings that may adversely affect human health. Pay Range: $26.01 to $28.90 Preferred Qualifications: Bachelor's degree in environmental health or other science field. Prior experience in a customer-service field, environmental health, or public health is preferred. Candidate must excel in assessing and mitigating risks, conflict resolution, have strong technical writing skills, and have strong communication skills. Under general supervision of a Registered Environmental Health Specialist, is responsible for making inspections for the purpose of enforcing public and environmental health regulations; performs related duties as required. Examples of Work: Conducts routine on-site inspections of restaurants, food establishments, residential property, schools, swimming pools, vending commissaries, recreational areas, landfills, licensed compost facilities, and commercial enterprises to determine compliance with laws and regulations governing environmental health requirements; Conducts routine on-site inspections of mechanical water and wastewater disposal systems for conformance to laws and regulations governing environmental health requirements; Interprets regulations, recommends changes in procedures, and issues orders for correcting deficiencies and violations to responsible parties; Investigate rodent and insect infestations and reports conditions found; Investigate complaints and makes special studies of environmental hazards throughout the City, and prepares reports of conditions found and recommends corrective actions; Conducts routine inspections and investigates complaints of body art facilities; Conducts inspections and investigations for presence of lead or lead poisoning in coordination with the Center for Disease Control and Housing and Urban Development; Conducts lead poisoning/risk reduction education programs for homeowners, parents, and health care professionals; Conducts interventions for homeowners to identify the presence of asthma triggers including mold and chemicals, as well as other general safety concerns; Utilizes GIS software and equipment to route and operate the truck-mounted fogging equipment that monitors ratio combinations of insecticides; completes and maintains accurate records; Provides education and consultation and investigates complaints regarding hazardous or infectious waste disposal; Inspects infectious waste generators/treatment facilities to ensure compliance with applicable regulations; Maintains records of conditions found and recommendations made on each inspection; Attends training classes in approved inspection methods; Attends staff conferences for instruction in the proper interpretation of departmental policies and objectives; May give testimony in court; May communicate with individuals who have limited English language skills. Minimum Qualifications: Possession of a valid State of Ohio certificate as an Environmental Health Specialist-In-Training. Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license. Positions allocated to this classification may require conversational proficiency in a language or languages other than English. SPECIAL NOTE: Section 4736.15 of the Ohio Revised Code permits an Environmental Health Specialist-In-Training, under the supervision of a Registered Environmental Health Specialist, to engage in the practice of environmental health for a period not to exceed five (5) years.
