Position Overview: The City of Salem is seeking an experienced leader to fill the full-time position of City Traffic Engineer following the retirement of the incumbent. This high-profile role ensures the safe and efficient operation of the Citys transportation infrastructure, combining technical expertise, complex problem-solving, and a commitment to public engagement. Serving as City Traffic Engineer offers a unique and rewarding opportunity within Salems Public Works Department. Responsibilities
Establish policies, respond to issues, and implement solutions for the Citys transportation system, including roadways, bike lanes, signs, signals, on-street parking, ADA access, electric vehicle charging sites, streetlights, pedestrian safety, speed limit adjustments, neighborhood traffic calming, and community events in the right-of-way Provide guidance, explain requirements, and identify options to address competing interests in the public right-of-way Serve as the Citys ambassador to the community, senior managers, elected officials, and county, state, and federal agency staff Oversee transportation planning and projects, ensuring compliance with City policies and safety standards Qualifications
Bachelors degree in Civil Engineering or a related field from an accredited college or university Fourteen (14) or more years of experience in Civil, Environmental, Structural, Construction Engineering, or a closely related discipline, or any combination of education, experience, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities Professional Civil Engineer (PE) license required (or ability to obtain Oregon PE license within one year of appointment) Oregon Driver License and ability to meet the City of Salems driving standards Ability to pass pre-employment background check Skills & Attributes
Proficiency in traffic engineering principles and transportation system management Expertise in complex problem-solving and decision-making Strong public engagement, communication, and interpersonal skills Leadership experience with demonstrated ability to collaborate across diverse stakeholders Benefits
