Patient Care Technician / Emergency Department / Per Diem Delivers direct/indirect care to patients of all ages from neonate, infant, pediatric, adolescent, and adult to geriatric, under the delegation/direction/supervision of a physician, registered nurse, and/or licensed practical nurse. Assists in maintaining a safe, clean environment and performs clerical/administrative functions as assigned. Demonstrates critical thinking/clinical reasoning in decision making to assure the delivery of safe, quality, timely, compassionate, and cost-effective care to the patient populations served by the department(s)/unit(s)/area(s). Effectively communicates and collaborates both intra- and interdepartmentally with patients, families, physicians, administration and other healthcare team members. Documents accurately and in a timely manner. Adheres to organizational policies and procedures; and regulatory/accrediting body requirements. Education and Work Experience High school diploma or equivalent. Current STNA (State Tested Nurse Aide) certification preferred. For Emergency Department only current STNA (State Tested Nurse Aide) or EMT-B (Emergency Medical Technician Basic) certification preferred. Current American Heart Association (AHA) Healthcare Provider CPR (BLS) certification required. Previous neonatal, pediatric, adolescent, adult, and/or geriatric patient care experience preferred. Knowledge and Skills Knowledge of and demonstration of basic nursing care and treatment procedures (e.g., assisting in positioning, lifting, obtaining vital signs, obtaining weight/height, obtaining capillary blood glucose). Knowledge of and demonstration of patient standards of care in assigned unit/area. Knowledge of infection control and blood-borne pathogen practices. Demonstration of effective problem solving, decision-making, interpersonal, and team work skills. Demonstration of effective verbal and written communication. Demonstration of positive customer service. Demonstration of ability to manage time effectively and adapt to changes in workload. Equipment/Tools/Software Basic computer literacy (keyboarding; order/data entry and retrieval; word processing) required. Knowledge of and skill in using all instrumentation/equipment for patient care utilized in the assigned department/area including but not limited to compression devices, capillary blood glucose, vital signs. Primary Job Responsibilities The activities outlined below reflect the general duties considered necessary for the principle functions of the job as identified, and shall not be considered a detailed description of all the work requirements that may be inherent in the position. A. Patient Care Under the delegation/direction/supervision of the physician, registered nurse, and/or licensed practical nurse and within the scope of practice, provides/assists with and accurately documents activities of daily living (ADLs) which include but are not limited to: Bathing Dressing and undressing Oral care Hair Care Toileting Personal hygiene Mobility as activity order allows Feeding/hydration which includes: Preparing patients for meal times by assisting those that need help in getting positioned properly. Feeding patients requiring help or assisting with tray/food set-up Providing fresh drinking water. Providing between meal nourishment as diet order allows. Collecting and serving food trays. Positioning/repositioning and following turn schedules. Performing skin care and pressure ulcer prevention techniques and notifying the RN of any skin care issues. Under the delegation/direction/supervision of the physician, registered nurse, and/or licensed practical nurse and within the scope of practice, provides/assists with and accurately documents patient monitoring, which includes but is not limited to: Obtaining patient's blood glucose per capillary finger-stick as ordered and notifying RN of results. Observing and recording the patient's intake and output, and/or calorie count; and notifying the RN of any deviations from the usual. Obtaining accurate blood pressure, pulse, respiratory rate, temperature, and SaO2 and notifying the RN of abnormal vital signs immediately. Obtaining patient's height and/or weight. Performing Point of Care (POC) testing (e.g. urine pregnancy testing, urine dip testing) and notifying the RN of results. Performing electrocardiogram (EKG/ECG) testing and submitting for physician review. Responding to and silencing peripheral IV and bed/chair alarms and notifying the RN immediately. Discontinuing peripheral IVs. Applying and/or removing non-sterile dressings and compresses and reporting abnormal findings to the RN. Performing hourly purposeful rounding in collaboration with the RN. Serving as a safety companion. Under the delegation/direction/supervision of the physician, registered nurse, and/or licensed practical nurse and within the scope of practice, provides/assists with and accurately documents processes/preparations for patient care which include but are not limited to: Admitting patients (e.g. placing and orienting to room, obtaining vital signs, placing monitoring leads, providing call light, directing family members to appropriate waiting areas). Gathering supplies and equipment in preparation for various diagnostic or treatment procedures (e.g. pelvic exams, suturing) performed by physicians and nurses; remaining with the patient to provide emotional support when requested. Changing bed linen and straightening/organizing/tidying the patient's room throughout shift; providing extra linens, blankets, as needed; safeguarding personal items. Answering call lights promptly and assisting/following up on patient needs. Transporting patients. Patients who require cardiac monitoring must also be accompanied by an ACLS trained staff member. Transporting patients to/caring for patients in the morgue, as requested. Directing patient's visitors and family as appropriate. Delivering specimens to the Laboratory. Transporting blood and blood products from the Laboratory. Supporting incoming/outgoing air transport (helipad duties). Performing between-patient cleaning of designated room, including removal of trash to appropriate receptacles, and cleaning horizontal surfaces and high-touch surfaces and/or mopping the floor with approved disinfectant. Stocking/restocking patient refreshments and nourishment in refrigerator. Stocking/Restocking patient care/unit supplies as directed. Under the delegation/direction/supervision of the physician, registered nurse, and/or licensed practical nurse and within the scope of practice, accurately documents the appropriate set-up, use, adjustment, application, discontinuation, and/or cleaning of patient care equipment, which includes but is not limited to: Lift/hover mats/transfer devices. Bed and chair alarms. Trapezes. Cold therapy devices. Continuous passive motion (CPM) devices. External pneumatic compression (EPC) cuffs. Endoscopes (e.g. bronchoscope, colonoscope, and gastroscope). Wheelchairs, stretchers, carts, beds, bassinets. Steris sterilizer, including running tests and instruments. (Perioperative). Cleaning anesthesia machines, carts, and other equipment. (Perioperative/OB) B. Leadership Supports the mission, vision, and values of the organization. Organizes daily assignments to meet responsibilities within scheduled time frame. Complies with all hospital, Nursing Division, and unit policies and procedures; monitors/addresses staff compliance with same. Assists with creating and fostering/supporting an environment of trust, respect, and teamwork. Participates as requested in the evaluation of new products and equipment. Reports issues with equipment and supplies. Inventories and assists with ordering needed supplies and facilitating availability as needed for patient care. Demonstrates loyalty and commitment throughout the organization.
