POSITION OVERVIEW: Reporting to the Director of Research & Evaluation, the Data Specialist will build and maintain a data management system that drives the Learning & Community (L&C) division-helping to track progress, identify growth opportunities, and measure impact over time. Acting as a connector, this role brings together data from multiple systems and sources to create a unified, accurate, and accessible view of the division's work. The Data Specialist will help to manage both structured and unstructured data, automate processes, create reports and visualizations, and build custom dashboards that support L&C goals.
The Data Specialist will also support the department's research and evaluation efforts, including helping to collect, analyze, and report on quantitative and qualitative research data. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Collect, organize, cleanse, and analyze data from diverse sources (CRM, internal databases, APIs, spreadsheets, etc.). Build and maintain reports, dashboards, and visualizations that provide actionable insights into program effectiveness and answer key questions for stakeholders. Translate complex analytical findings into clear, actionable recommendations tailored to both technical and non-technical audiences. Develop and maintain databases, data collection systems, and data analytics tools. Ensure accuracy and integrity of data by implementing quality control measures. Audit and validate data inputs and records to safeguard data quality. Contribute to the development of a data dictionary, standards, training resources, and ongoing updates. Work collaboratively with teams to understand data needs and develop effective data collection strategies. Support quantitative (e.g., surveys, metrics) and qualitative (e.g., interviews, focus groups) data collection and analysis. Demonstrate commitment to Shedd Aquarium's mission, vision, and core values. QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:
BA/BS in Social Sciences, Statistics, Computer Science, or related field, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
Experience:
Previous experience in data analysis, data management, or a related field. Proficiency in SQL. Proficiency in data analysis and visualization tools (e.g., Excel, SPSS, Power BI, Tableau). Ability to perform basic statistical analyses, merge complex datasets, and conduct qualitative analyses. Strong critical thinking, problem-solving, and attention to detail. Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to convey findings to diverse audiences. Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment. Willingness to travel and work flexible hours if needed. Commitment to Shedd Aquarium's mission and vision. Preferred Experience:
