Onto Innovation strives to optimize customers' critical path of progress by making them smarter, faster and more efficient.Job Summary & ResponsibilitiesWe are seeking a highly skilled and innovative Staff Mechanical Design Engineer to join our team in developing advanced hardware and tooling solutions for next-generation metrology instruments. This role involves the full product lifecycle-from concept development and detailed design to prototyping, testing, and final release. You will work independently or lead small teams, depending on project scope.The Staff Mechanical Design Engineer will be responsible for developing hardware and tooling concepts.Perform detailed design calculations, stress/thermal/modal analyses (FEA/CFD), and vibration analysis.Design optical mounts, sub-micron precision adjustment mechanisms, and positioning systems.Finalize the design through product release for current and future metrology instruments.Ability to architect basic mechatronic systems, select motors, sensors, drive components, etc. based on satisfying system requirements.Recognize and design simple and elegant structures.Justify and quantify performance-based metrics that led to their design decisionsHighly collaborative and team-oriented personality with a strong desire to succeed Experience with 3D CAD design and finite element analysis (SolidWorks preferred).Demonstrated ability to create clear reports and documentation.Demonstrated capability with stress, deflection and modal analysis using FEA programs.Demonstrated capability with the flow and thermal analysis using CFD/FEA programs.Demonstrated technical depth in concept design of complex mechanical systems.Demonstrated capability with manual machining and fabrication equipment, mill, lathe, welding.Depending on the size and scope of the project, this work may be done by the engineer alone, or by a small team of engineers and designers.Qualifications8+ years' experience working as a mechanical design engineerBachelor's degree or higher in science or engineering (strong preference for mechanical engineering)Proficient in motion control, including servo tuning, stage control, and automation mapping.Deep understanding of vibration analysis, modal analysis, and VC (Vibration Criteria) standards.Experience with isolation systems and designing for micron- and nanometer-level accuracy.Familiarity with system architecture, design requirements, and technical specifications for high-performance systems.Proficiency with hand measurement tools.Experience implementing motion control systems.Experience with microcontrollers, Arduino, Pi Proficient with accelerometers and spectrum analyzer to quantify and diagnose a vibration.Skilled with contact and non-contact measurement types, indicators, cap gages, interferometer, to measure mechanical errors and drifts.Experience delivering high purity gases and basic LabView experience.Experience with photo contamination, methods of prevention, and DUV systems.Experience designing mechanical systems for very clean environments, semiconductor, biotech, food systems are all applicable.Skill using mathematical modeling software.Strong background in precision mechanics, mechatronics, and electromechanical system design.Salary: $126,000-180,000Onto Innovation Inc. offers competitive salaries and a generous benefits package, including health/dental/vision/life/disability, PTO, 401K plan with employer match, and an Employee Stock Purchase Program (ESPP) along with health & wellness initiatives.
