Safety and Security Position

This is the first of four levels in the Safety and Security series. Incumbents guard, patrol, and/or monitor facilities to prevent theft, violence, infractions of rules, and other forms of loss. Responsibilities may include operating and maintaining x-ray and metal detector equipment, performing and documenting inspections of facilities, and deploying life safety equipment, and other essential equipment. This position will occasionally require working flexible hours as assigned. Essential Functions: Guards, patrols, and monitors City facilities to prevent theft, violence, infractions of rules, and other forms of loss. Greets customers upon entering the building, maintains a high uniformed presence on duty, and routinely patrols the grounds and facilities. Makes short term decisions on actions needed during emergency situations. Grants or denies access to restricted areas of facilities. Specializes in the maintenance and servicing of life safety equipment. Performs and documents inspections of life safety and other essential equipment and City facilities. Enters work orders as needed and follows up to ensure discrepancies are resolved. Provides accurate and timely responses to telephone and in person inquiries from the public and gathers and provides information to personnel as applicable. Answers alarms and investigates disturbances. Notifies public safety and personnel in the event of an emergency. Analyzes information to choose the best solution and solve problems. Enters, transcribes, records, stores, and maintains information in written and/or electronic form. Performs other duties of a similar nature or level. Minimum Qualifications and Standards Required: Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of public safety, security, environmental and loss prevention. Tools and equipment used in security and loss prevention to include alarm systems, video monitoring, handguns, night sticks, first aid kits, fire extinguishers, and two-way radios. Customer service principles. Applicable Federal, State, and local laws, rules, and regulations. Recordkeeping principles. CPR/First Aid. Computers and related software applications. Skill in: Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with subordinates, coworkers, supervisor, the public, etc., sufficient to exchange or convey information and to give and receive work direction. Critical thinking skills using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems. Physical Requirements: The work is medium work which requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required: Balancing: Maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing, or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces. Crouching: Bending the body downward and forward by bending leg an spine. Feeling: Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature, or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips. Fingering: Picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling. Grasping: Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm. Hearing: Perceiving the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discrimination sound. Lifting: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. Mental Acuity: Making rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes. Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction. Repetitive Motion: Substantial movements (motions) of the wrist, hands, and/or fingers. Speaking: Expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word including the ability to convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately and concisely. Standing: Particularly for sustained periods of time. Stooping: Bending body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist.
