Two years of experience as a medical assistant or in a related field.Nature & Purpose of Position Performs Medical Assistant duties for the Sam Houston State University Physicians Clinic. Cares for and treats patients according to accepted nursing and medical standards.Primary Responsibilities Performs Medical Assistant duties: Delivers direct patient care as assigned. Performs testing and gathers information. Communicates with the provider and documents in medical record. Manages medical inventory management. Maintains confidentiality in accordance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) regulations. Assists physicians and other providers in the care of sick and injured patients. Rooms and interviews patients regarding their reason for visit, medical history, medications, and other information pertinent to their healthcare. Takes patients' vital signs and records in the medical record. Maintains supplies, equipment, and pharmaceuticals as necessary. Maintains, restocks, and cleans exam rooms and checks equipment between patient screenings. Records on electronic health records, all pertinent information concerning care, vitals, and medication. Assists with answering the phone and taking patient messages as needed. Responsibilities include drawing blood, routine injections in children and adults, obtaining specimens, and assisting with minor procedures under the direction of the physicians and other providers. Plans, develops, implements, coordinates and monitors programs or services. Assists in the development of policies, procedures, and guidelines. Coordinates and schedules appointments and activities as needed. Interprets policies and procedures. Compiles, tracks, and reviews data and reports. Attends meetings. Prepares, reviews, revises, and distributes reports, documents, and correspondence as directed. Performs other related duties as assigned.Other Specifications Pediatric Medical Assistant Preferred.Must be extremely accurate in following written and oral instructions regarding patient care. Must be able to communicate effectively with outside medical facilities, students, other staff, and visitors. Alertness and careful attention are required to prevent injury to self or others. Must have a positive attitude toward change, professional growth, and teamwork. Must have proficient computer skills. All documentation must be recorded in electronic health record. Must work efficiently due to busy schedules. Requires a general knowledge of standard office functions. Requires good knowledge of procedures and practices.
