Overview
The Pediatric Oncology Patient Navigator for the UCSF Pediatric Medical Specialties provides individualized assistance and support to patients throughout their care with Pediatric Oncology, serving as a resource and advocate for pediatric patients and families while they are going through the journey of diagnosis and treatment for cancer. The service is offered to pediatric patients from their initial visit to their ongoing post treatment appointments 2-3 weeks after discharge and ongoing monitoring during treatment for pediatric cancer. A particular focus is assisting patients coming to UCSF for second opinion or advanced cancer care from an outside referring physician. Patient Navigator is responsible for insuring an efficient visit that cover referring provider and patient needs. This is a limited appointment; assignment will end June 2026. Responsibilities
Provide patient care coordination by serving as a communication bridge between the patient, family and referring providers and services they may require during treatment. Develop expertise in the operations and systems underlying all service areas directly or indirectly related to Pediatric oncology care at UCSF, including interdepartmental support for patients receiving care outside of Pediatric Oncology. Demonstrate self-initiative and exceptional social skills and emotional intelligence to support patients with psycho-social needs and communicate effectively with faculty and staff across the clinical enterprise. Stay current on inpatient care protocols, particularly Phase I protocols for which patients may be referred to UCSF; attend weekly tumor boards and other meetings where patient status and new protocols are discussed. Contribute to the patient-centric care mission by supporting patient education efforts and ensuring patients have access to required clinical services and health information to inform decisions about their care.
Qualifications
Required:
Ability to orient and work in all UCSF Medical Center locations as needed. Effective communication skills, both over the telephone and in person. Basic keyboard and computer skills (Microsoft Office) and basic math skills. Associates degree and 6 months related experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Bi-lingual or multi-lingual capability (Spanish, Cantonese). Experience with insurance verification (plans), patient financial services, medical record data abstraction, or data analysis. Experience with Epic electronic medical record and oncology experience.
