VP Accounting Corporate Controller

Job Purpose: The Vice President Accounting, Corporate Controller is a key leadership position within the Accounting & Finance Department, responsible for leading the company’s accounting function, including corporate, division, and technical accounting, external reporting, tax and audit. This role ensures the integrity of the company’s financial records, internal controls, and adherence to U.S. GAAP and relevant regulatory requirements. Reporting directly to the SVP Finance, this is a hands-on leadership role focused on building scalable processes and leading a high-performing accounting team across a dynamic, growth-oriented national homebuilding platform. The VP of Accounting, Corporate Controller will actively collaborate with senior finance leadership and divisional finance teams to ensure accurate, timely, and insightful financial reporting in support of the company’s strategic and operational objectives. Essential Functions: Leadership and Management • Lead and oversee all aspects of corporate and division accounting, including general ledger, consolidation, and month-end close processes. • Develop, implement, and maintain accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls to ensure compliance with GAAP and corporate standards. • Oversee technical accounting matters, including revenue recognition, joint ventures, purchase accounting, and complex transactions. • Lead annual audit process and manage the relationship with external auditors. • Act as a key liaison between the corporate office and division financial leaders, ensuring alignment and consistency in accounting practices. • Manage preparation and review of annual tax filings. • Lead and manage the corporate accounting & accounts payable team, including hiring, training, mentoring, and performance management. This position has four direct reports. • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local financial and tax regulations Hands-On Financial Responsibilities: • Perform and review month-end and year-end close activities, including preparation and posting of journal entries, cost analysis, and financial reporting. • Review and analyze financial statements, account reconciliations, and various financial reports to ensure accuracy, completeness, and compliance with standards. • Maintain and oversee the integrity of the general ledger Process Improvement & Strategic Projects: • Identify and implement process improvements across the accounting function to improve efficiency and accuracy. • Support system upgrades or ERP enhancements, and full system conversions, ensuring a smooth transition and effective integration. Qualifications: Skills and Attributes: • Strong leadership and team-building skills with a hands-on, collaborative management style. • In-depth knowledge of GAAP and financial reporting best practices. • Proven ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a dynamic environment. • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills. • High proficiency in Microsoft Excel and familiarity with ERP/accounting software (NewStar, JDE, Oracle Fusion, or similar platforms). • Results-oriented with a continuous improvement mindset. Education and Experience: • CPA required; active license preferred • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting; Master’s or MBA a plus • Minimum 15 years of progressive accounting experience, including leadership in a multi-entity, multi-state organization. • Experience in the homebuilding, real estate, or construction industries strongly preferred • Demonstrated success leading accounting teams through growth, change, or system implementations • Prior public accounting experience strongly preferred (Big 4 or national firm) WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing their essential functions of this job.
