nThe LA County Board of Supervisors recentlydeclared a local state of emergency for homelessness ( , and the County is working to revise and expand our response to help all who are affected. We are looking for qualified and passionate individuals to help us in the mission of addressing issues like housing, mental health, and substance use. nThe Department of Mental Health is seeking qualified candidates to fill emergency Intermediate Typist Clerk vacancies related to the homelessness crisis.
nUnder the emergency order, applicants who meet the requirements may be hired for an initial period of up to 90 days, with an opportunity for permanent County employment.
nBefore the end of your initial work period, you will be assessed on your work performance. This assessment will be weighted 100%.
nThose who successfully pass the assessment will be considered for permanent appointment to Intermediate Typist Clerk.
nEssential Job Functions
nTypewrites abstracts of judgment, executive notices and similar documents requiring extreme accuracy or independent judgment in selecting materials.
nTypewrites complex charts, forms, statistical and similar documents from rough draft requiring skill in arranging tabular material, setting up forms and extreme accuracy in typing.
nProcesses documents according to a predetermined but specialized procedure for such purposes as formulating property descriptions, and recording and indexing court papers, transcripts and legal process.
nChecks documents for completeness, accuracy and compliance with legal and other requirements.
nAnswers questions and gives information to the Public concerning such matters as regulations, procedures and the preparation and filing of legal forms, applications and permit requests; acts as special receptionist or counter clerk.
nKeeps records of a nature requiring specialized knowledge, discrimination and judgment in the selection, compilation or computation of data to be included such as cost data records and distribution and control ledger, which can be posted without extensive knowledge of bookkeeping principles.
nMaintains clerical controls where work is divided among personnel performing separate parts of an entire operation.
nSearches records and files for data where judgment and discrimination are required in selecting or abstracting material.
nAnswers correspondence requiring the selection of data necessary in formulating the reply, referring unusual cases to a superior for approval.
nEstimates amounts due and collects fees.
nExercises minor supervision over the work of others.
nCompares or segregates documents in cases where specialized knowledge of the function and more than a routine check for accuracy are involved, as in the auditing of warrants or purchase orders.

nSix months of full-time office clerical experience involving typewriting in the County service or in districts under the jurisdiction of the County -OR- One year's full-time office clerical experience involving typewriting outside the County service -OR- A certificate or Associate of Arts degree in clerical procedures or office administration from an accredited college.

nIn order to qualify, applicants must pass a County of Los Angeles approved typing test at a minimum of 40 words per minute.
nUnder the emergency order, applicants who meet the requirements may be hired for an initial period of up to 90 days, with an opportunity for permanent County employment.

nIMPORTANT TYPING TEST INFORMATION:
nA qualifying typing performance test of 40 net words-per-minute will be administered to candidates who have not held a typing position in the service of the County of Los Angeles. Candidates must successfully complete the typing performance test at time of filing to qualify.
nApplicants who have not taken a typing test administered by the Los Angeles County can apply to the "Typing Test-Score Banking Only" announcement bulletin, consisting of a timed typing test designed to measure speed accuracy in typing. Typing performance test results from this examination will be used for the Senior-Typist Clerk, Emergency Appointment exam, which requires a proficiency at 40 net words per minute.
